President Obamas uphill battle to re-election is getting steeper.
A report released today by the centrist think-tank Third Way showed that more than 825,000 voters in eight key battleground states have fled the Democratic Party since Obama won election in 2008.
The numbers show that Democrats path to victory just got harder, said Lanae Erickson, the reports co-author. We are seeing both an increase in independents and a decrease in Democrats and that means the coalition they have to assemble is going to rely even more on independents in 2012 than it did in 2008.
Amid frustrating partisan gridlock and unprecedentedly low party-approval ratings, the number of voters registering under a major party is falling fast, but it is also falling disproportionately.
In eight states that will be must-wins in 2012 Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina and Pennsylvania Democrats lost 5.4 percent of their registered voters while Republicans lost 3.1 percent. The number of independent voters in those states jumped 3.4 percent.

“Independent” —destructive, disgusting, clueless, convictionless all rolled up into one harmful little fuzz ball.
You can flee the party but the party can always fleece you.
"Independent" keeps me off a lot of mailing lists.
1) Wet finger.
2) Expose to horizontal air column.
3) Determine mean magnetic bearing and velocity.
4) Turn zombie and lurch forth until encountering resistance.
Spineless, navel-gazing pissants.
Looks like voters are fed up with both parties, and who can blame them?
“In eight states that will be must-wins in 2012 Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina and Pennsylvania”
My thoughts (which are probably worth everything you’re paying for them, lol).
North Carolina - Almost surely goes GOP in 2012. Virginia and Indiana (two other states Obama got in 2008) should go solidly red in 2012, IMHO.
Florida - I consider Florida to be 1 of 3 “Decider” states - Fla, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. I believe whoever takes at least 2 out of 3 of them will win the election. My gut feeling is that the GOP will have a slight edge in Florida, at least, though it’s not a lock. Maybe a 3-5 point win?
Pennsylvania - Just don’t know on this one. I think a strong GOP ticket can take it this time, though I also think it will be a harder prize to take than Ohio or Florida.
If this joker is correct, it will be a hard time for obama to sell his class warfare against the "1%."
"Nonpartisan reform measures" is why so many casual observers here don't like Newt. But according to Ali, "the independents" ought to love him.
I hope all of us know that it is really stupid to register independent in a closed primary state like Pa.
awesome news
What [Obama] needs to do is present himself as somebody above partisan politics, IndependentVoting.orgs Ali said.
Wonder if there is one stinkin PR firm working for the GOP that can prove this is not true.....unless the GOP elite don't want to win?
That’s all well and good, but you are not the “Independent” I am referring to. The people who swing back and forth, i.e. those that decide elections are truly lacking either a moral compass or a well-developed intellect.
Looks like ACORN will just have to make up more names and submit more phony absentee ballots.
“unless the GOP elite don’t want to win? “
I believe the GOP elite would prefer 4 more of 0 than 4 of Newt!
Sorry I have to call you out, but there’s no difference between the Democrat and Republican parties. Everyday dozens of Republican politicians are called “RINO’s, when in fact, they embody exactly what the Republican Party stands for: socialism, at a slightly lesser velocity.
Per the USA Today, as of 2004 there were 74 Million Democrats, 55 million Republicans, and 42 million Independents. If you have updated numbers, pelase share them. I imagine that with the Tea Party movement, many have fled the Republican Party to become independent, just as it appears is happening to the Demcratic party.
Name sling as you please, but I’m not going to play a part in the two-party, gang mentality system the Founding Fathers warned against.
Anyone reading my posts over the last 7 years will know I am a conservative. Of this there is NO DOUBT. I have paid my dues.
Now that being said.... there is something going on here folks, and this paradigm shift towards independents is demonstrative of it.
It is the Establishment vs. the People.
The Establishment is made up of people who are in current “government/public” service. Their goals are to keep their jobs, move up the power ladder, and get a raise. They do not give a rats patooty about the People - us.
It is BOTH parties. Republican and Democrat.
Non-establishment candidates like Cain, Bachman, Paul etc get the wholly crap beat out of them till the give up and go away - and I say this with out regard for whether or not I support them. The Anti-Establishment candidates get torn to shreds until they leave, and they nearly always leave (see Cain).
This move towards the Independent demonstrates this unconscious recognition of the Establishment vs the People reality.
Want another example?
The Tea Party.
Thus far it has remained a faction of the GOP, but if this trend continues - where the GOP establishment rules, you will see it splinter off to independent as well.
I believe a large number of Dems are registering GOP in PA so they can “help” nominate Willard....so Obama can win the general against his chosen opponent.
“Independent destructive, disgusting, clueless, convictionless all rolled up into one harmful little fuzz ball.”
Please do not confuse “independent” with “moderate.” I happen to be an independent for two reasons; one, The Republican Party is too far left for me to want to belong to it. Not in what they say but in what they do. Two, my state requires no party affiliation.
Even if my state required party affiliation, I would register as “independent” proudly.
You are correct. All should be forced to belong to one (D) half of the ruling party or the (R) other. All others should be put up against a wall and shot.
