2012 End-of-the-World Countdown Based On Mayan Calendar Starts Today
ABC News via Yahoo ^ | 21 Dec 2011 | Suzan Clarke

The countdown to the apocalypse is on.

We're one year away from Dec. 21, 2012, the date that the ancient Mayan Long Count calendar allegedly marked as the end of an era that would reset the date to zero and signal the end of humanity.

But will it?

There have been many end of times predictions over the years. Christian radio host Harold Camping faced widespread ridicule when his predictions that the world would end twice this year - on May 21, and then on Oct. 21 - failed to materialize.

But in the flurry of doomsday predictions - there have been similar dire warnings about the world coming to an end from various cultures, including Native Americans, the Chinese, Egyptians and even the Irish - the supposed Mayan prophecy seems to have held the most sway with believers.

I remember something about California falling away from the BIG ONE in 1988.

Read an article (was it here?) that scientists have decided the world will NOT end in 2012, after all. It was a season of change.

The galactic magnetic field, like the earth’s magnetic field, is weakest at the equator.

It’s not the end of anything except one 26,000 year cycle. Then another begins. I hope the next cycle ends better than this one.

I’m trying to get my copy of ‘88 Reasons Why The Rapture will Occur in 1988’ back from my son...

I’m trying to get my copy of ‘88 Reasons Why The Rapture will Occur in 1988’ back from my son.

You can tell I am on Facebook a bit, when I want to Like a comment like that. It's always a good idea to prepare. Since our house was foreclosed on and we moved, our finances have plunged. Plus, some of mu kids are locusts...I mean, boys, so any food coming in disappears before it hits the cupboard. But, I do plan on getting more freelance work next year to have food storage, since I have the room.

Yet, I am not going to sit around wringing my hands over what may or may not happen. I never understand why some people (not you) seem to get such morbid pleasure at the idea of the world ending. Yes. Things suck. But, life has its ups and downs. It's better to work on making life better for everyone around oneself, rather than thinking abut the world ending.

yes, that’s correct- but once we PASS the center, it is the opposite

That’s what worries me. If we have a huge external magnetic force acting oppisite of the earths magnetic force, it WILL have an effect.

We know our poles have chifted before- any correlation with crossing the galactic center?

Um. No. We'll still be way, way out in the Orion Spur of the Sagittarius Arm.

We'll be no closer to the galactic center when we cross the galactic equator than we would be closer to the earth's core when we cross the earth's equator.

huh?

but will will be poping up into the upper half of the galaxy- where the megnetic forces will be in the opposite direction

In other words, will will be closer to the north pole of the galaxy, rather than the south pole, for the first time in 26,000 years.

So, what dramatic thing happens to your magnetic compass when you cross the equator on your way from Quito to Ibarra?

SUDDENLY you are closer to the North pole than the South pole!

We’re not actually crossing the galactic center. The sun and earth are just going to line up tangentially with the galactic center. We’re still going to be occupying the same part of the spiral arm we’ve always inhabited at the same ginormous distance from the galactic center we’ve always been at. No magnetic fields, no nothing. Bad science is leading a lot of people astray on this nonsense.

No. Our position in the galaxy will remain unchanged. We’re crossing a plane, a geometric construct, not a real thing.

We’re moving perpendicular to a geometric line, not physically moving through any part of the galaxy outside of our own piece of it where we’ve always been.

I beg to differ

We do not circle the galaxy on a perfect line through the center- we bob up and down through the top and bottom half every 26,000 years
