...this years average cost of fuel sets a new record. For 2011, the national average price for fuel is about $3.50 a gallon. That accounts for about 8.4% of the average American familys income, the highest percentage in 30 years.
The average American household will have spent, a record, $4,155 filling up this year. Though its not what some Eastern Iowans wanted to hear, for many it wasnt a surprise.

I am so sick of the fake drama over this BULL**** social security tax.
Not quite as high as he would necessarily like.
Merry Christmas
Wait until our utility bills “necessarily skyrocket.” President scumbag is just getting warmed up.
Sheesh!
And I thought ALLCAPS was rude!
Of course the incompetent Repub wimps will not mention this fact. This should have been shouted from the rooftops during this debate.
Obama’s answer is to block the Keystone pipeline to bring more oil supply from friendly Canada into the US.
For that alone he should be voted out of office.
Well, the temporary 2% cut in social security will let them buy a pizza a week for the next two months (assuming they can afford the gas to go get it). This only helps the wealthy people though. Wealthy = have job, have car.
You mean yours hasn't already? My electric bill sure has.
Thanks Recovering_Democrat.
Not to rub salt in the wound, but that does not even count the added costs in the products we buy due to the cost of gasoline. Talk about inflation....
You and 40 million others....
Let alone a 2 month time frame of starving the coffers of social security will do much more damage than good let alone the administrative costs of the 2 month starvation of social security will cost more in itself than what would be helped by the lack of the retirement payments.
Gas prices have come down.
By October of next year, they will be at 1.99 a gallon, although your energy bill will have doubled. You will be told you saved money.
The media will tout the gasoline, ignore the electric bill and the world will bleat, “ohhhhbahhhhmaaaaaaaa”
You headline must be wrong, there is no way the average family paid $4155 MORE...$4155 in total maybe, but not ‘more’.
It’s gone up, to be sure, but the EPA is just getting started. Wait until they shut down, at a minimum 60, the bad coal fired electric plants. The cost of everything will skyrocket more than it has. Food has gone up quite a bit as well, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Most of the increase started under GWB and was due to his weak dollar. And his weak dollar was due to his love of government growth, and his desire to let the parts of our economy that contribute most to growth twist in the wind.
All the plug-in car owners however, welcome to Obamaville. Please pay your “fair share”.
And don’t burn out your neighborhood transformer charging your cars all night.
Hard to believe there are any left out there to call “bad”. They all have scrubbers and crap on them now.
You got that right!
He promised us that under his proposed policies, energy costs would skyrocket.
One promise the bastard is trying hard to keep. How this sad sack of **** can get reelected is simply the realization of prediction by Alexis deToqueville in the 1830s.
Don’t forget the federal ‘surcharges’ added to your telephone, water, sewage, electricity, gas and cable. My utilities have been out of this world. To make matters worse, I didn’t realize that a couple had gone up from what I usually paid a month because I get my bills online and they are automatically paid for the same amount on the same date every month so I don’t always check. Bam! I got hit with MAJOR late fees for two months.
