The Haditha Marines-The Squad Leader-A Final Chapter

It certainly seems appropriate that the last defendant in the Haditha case is the squad leader, SSgt Frank Wuterich. Leaders take responsibility, and SSgt Wuterich has taken full responsibility for the actions of his squad in Haditha. His stance from the outset has remained clear:

"My Marines responded to the threats they faced in the manner that we all had been trained", he has steadfastly maintained. "I will bear the memory of the events of that day forever, and will always mourn the unfortunate deaths of the innocent Iraqis who were killed during our response to the attack."

As the last Marine originally charged in the deaths of Iraqis in Haditha, Iraq in 2005, SSgt Wuterich will be seated at the defense table in his general court-martial two days from now, Wednesday, January 4th. Barring last minute motions or outright dismissal of charges, jury selection will begin Wednesday or Thursday. SSgt. Wuterich will be tried by a jury of combat-experienced Marines, and the panel will include at least two Marines from the enlisted ranks.

Much has been written over the last six years about Haditha, and links to some of the most recent news articles and commentaries are included at the bottom of this post to help bring readers up to date. Hey Uncle!

You’re right, Three counts of reckless endangerment by firing a weapon where civilian deaths occurred have been dropped. The judge also dismissed a charge of obstruction of justice alleging that SSgt Wuterich encouraged one of his Marines to lie to investigators.

Thanks for the article from Michelle Malkin, smooth.

Missed you guys!

I didn't know this about SSgt Wuterich's personal life, but it will definitely cause some jurors to think twice about SSgt Wuterich's future. Wuterich Haditha Court Martial Update

Looks like they probably won’t start the actual trial until Monday if the panel won’t be selected until tomorrow afternoon.

Happy to see Michelle Malkin will cover this also, she’ll give a fair assessment of it, I’m sure much of the left leaning media won’t.

Thanks for the updates/info everyone. From Defend Our Marines

Jury selection is today: eleven enlisted and officers and three alternates will go through UCMJ version of the Voir Dire selection. LtCol. David Jones presiding.

Panel must have at least five and can have seven or nine members although somewhere in the middle is likely.

Marine Corps spokesman Lt. Col. Joseph Kloppel said Thursday that the military court at Camp Pendleton had not finished its interviews of Marines with combat experience to serve on the jury for the trial of Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich. He says opening arguments now could begin as late as Monday.

Hi Girlene.

Since his ordeal began, Wuterich has gotten divorced and gained custody of his three school-age daughters, who live with him in nearby Temecula. He works a desk job at Camp Pendleton’s 1st Marine Division headquarters.

That is an interesting update. It's rare for any father to get custody of a child in a divorce situation.

lol, okay, that picture is totally creepy.

Wasn’t David Jones the judge that decided the generals in the Haditha cases (Jim Mattis, Sam Helland) may have been subject to undue command influence, but, they were soooooo awesome, that they didn’t let it affect them?

ummmmhmmmmmm.....right.
