18 rounds in 5 seconds: How Glock became ‘America’s gun’
Las Vegas Sun ^ | 18 jan 2012 | J. Patrick Coolican

Posted on 01/18/2012 11:02:18 AM PST by rellimpank

We’re at Desert Hills Shooting Club near Boulder City, and Paul Barrett steps up with a Glock 17. He fires the 9 mm semi-automatic pistol 18 times in about five seconds and hits the target every time.

In that five seconds, he demonstrates why the Glock is beloved by gun enthusiasts and police officers alike. It’s fast, reliable and offers a lot of stopping power, with three times the number of rounds as the old police favorite, the Smith & Wesson .38 revolver.

Barrett, in town this week for the Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT), the big firearms convention, has just published “Glock: The Rise of America’s Gun,” an entertaining and informative history — even if you’re not a gun enthusiast — of the firearm company that redefined the American handgun market beginning in the 1980s.

Depends on the job. Knew a guy who (long legitimate story short) went thru 50 to get the job done.
Placement is more important than diameter. Neither mean anything if you’re out. Once you’re out, you’re out.

Bought a S.A. XD9 5”. Haven’t had a chance to take to the range yet.

Be prepared to smile at every post on this thread.

I've been a Glock guy for twenty years. (Yeah, 1911s are fun, but so are sailboats.)

I only recently completed my Glock replacement program. Sold them all off except one G17 for nostalgia purposes.

Why?

I shot an XD.

Won’t need anymore then the first...after that you and you glock will be enjoying a dirt nap.

Only if you're committing murder.

If you find yourself in an actual gunfight...you're in for one BIG surprise!

out of curiosity I was tryng to figure out which pistol, of any brand, would have the most rounds. No special configuration, no exotic rare pistol, no super long clip, just a close to factory configuration.

17+1, as indicated in lead article, is about it as far as stock factory norm goes. Beyond that you get into squishyness of floorplates, long mags, or anemic rounds (ex.: .17HMR). These are not “exotic” or “special”, but do strain the limits of practical/normal choices.

Well to just add to the mix, my favorite pistol to date is my first generation Walther P99 .40sw. Much nicer than the Glock IMHO.

—for a long time it was the FN-manufactured Browning of about 1935 , commonly known as the Hi-Power (improperly,IIRC) which was the one where John Browning upgraded and corrected the 1911 model-—

We’re not playing army. If you need two shots to stop the threat, you take two shots. Glock or Smith or whatever.

If I were to draw my glock with the intent to kill, I'd let loose a minimum of three rounds at center mass.

That's a nice 686-Plus DCM at the bottom. I have a pre-lock Performance Center version with a Bausch & Lomb 4x Elite 3000 mounted on a Leupold mount.

I've polished it with about six hours of work using Mother's polish, and now it shines brighter than a brand new dime. Too nice to shoot anymore.

You oughtta take a look at the Nill-Grips furniture for S&W J-frames.

My XDM .40 has 16+1, and the 9 mm has 19+1 with the normal magazines.

They make it sound like no one has ever hit a target that much that fast. Glock was the late comer to the scene.

The writer is a complete idiot. He couldn’t find “down” if he dropped a hat.

Desert Sportsman is on the opposite side of the Las Vegas valley from Boulder City, maybe 30 miles away.

Boulder Rifle and Pistol Club is in Boulder City, NV.

The .45 ACP was designed to romp and stomp Moslem Juramentados.

The Colt .38 (an early low powered 9mm)was a failure.
