Indians pitcher Carmona arrested in identity case (Using false identity)

Indians pitcher Fausto Carmona has been arrested in his native Dominican Republic, according to multiple reports. Carmona is accused of using a false identity.

According to ESPNDeportes.com, Carmona’s real name is Roberto Hernandez Heredia. He was arrested Thursday after leaving the U.S. Consulate in the Dominican Republic, where he went to get a visa in order to attend spring training in Arizona next month.

“We were recently made aware of the situation that occurred today in the Dominican Republic and are currently in the process of gathering information,” Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said in a statement released by the club. “We are not prepared to make any additional comment at this time.”

In addition, other reports say Carmona’s real age is 31, not 28, which is what he had been listed at in the Indians’ media guide.

The Indians originally signed Carmona as a free agent on Dec. 28, 2000. According to the Indians’ media guide, he was born on Dec. 7, 1983, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Carmona has had an up-and-down career with the Indians, winning 19 games and finishing fourth in the Cy Young Award voting in 2007. In the last three years, he has lost 15, 14 and 12 games, respectively.

Carmona was the Indians’ opening-day starter last year but had another disappointing season, going 7-15 with a 5.25 ERA in 32 starts.

In March of 2008, Carmona signed a four-year, $15 million contract with the Indians. That contract included club options for $7 million in 2012, $9 million in 2013 and $12 million in 2014.

Following last year’s World Series, the Indians exercised the 2012 club option on the contract. Whether Carmona will be able to report on time to the Indians’ spring training camp in Goodyear, Ariz. for the start of spring training could be problematical, given Thursday’s arrest.

Why? One doesn’t use a false identity for no reason. Probably got a record, or is wanted.

Maybe he’s a Manchurian Candidate-kinda player...sent from North Korea into the Caribbean...sneaking into the US to spy on major league baseball? Heck, he might even be from Turkmenistan.

This is, or was, pretty widespread down in the DR. Players would get falsified credentials to make them appear years younger because a kid with a certain skill-set at 15 or 16 is a lot more attractive to US scouts than a young man at 19 or 20.

Who knows? Maybe one day we’ll get our politicians from down there?

It sounds like he has been playing his whole career under the false identity.

Perhaps he faked being 17 to keep playing in the teenage Dominican leagues, so he would be scouted.

And as he had amazing maturity, power, and control for a 17 year old he got the scouting attention he wanted.

He can always switch to football and play in the National Felons League.

Hey, as a lifetime Cleveland Indians fan, it's no big deal. The Tribe can just call up their two top pitching prospects, Alex White or Drew Pomerantz from the minors to replace him.

Oops, I forgot. The Indians traded them both last year for another south-of-the-border headcase, Ubaldo Jimenez. Never mind.
