Billionaire Gingrich Contributor [Sheldon Adelson] To Cut Support
Business Insider ^ | February 10, 2012 | Jaywon Choe

While billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson may have rescued Newt Gingrich’s campaign in its early days, today, he may have just buried it.

Bloomberg News reports that Adelson, who has donated $11 million to Gingrich’s Super PAC, does not plan to send any more money Gingrich’s way. Bloomberg is citing an anonymous source “familiar with their deliberations,” though an Adelson spokesman declined to comment.

The move seems to be weeks in the making. After poor showings by Gingrich in the last several races and the re-resurgence of Rick Santorum, the former House speaker has once again been pushed to the back of the Republican field. And Adelson may be shifting his focus. According to CNN, Adelson met with Mitt Romney in Nevada last week and “assured Romney that he will be behind him 100 percent should he become the nominee.”

What may be more alarming though is as money seems to be flooding out of the Gingrich camp, it appears to be heading into to Santorum’s, no doubt helped by his three-state sweep Tuesday.

Newt has laid out a plan. He has pages and pages of info on his website. He knows what to do.

Santorum and Paul are the only ones who haven’t been able to win a primary. Get your facts straight.

I agree. Santorum seems like a stand up guy. He can’t win either, but he seems genuine.

Agree with you that Newt is capable of fixing this mess and turning this nation around.
How sad to see this once great nation go on a downhill spiral. The demographics and morals have changed...maybe beyond repair. The greatest generation is dying off..we now have the entitlement generation.
God help America

What’s good is Newt got the vetting early in the primary process. It should have the same immunizing effect like they say it always does in the general election. The effect of those negative ads will wear off and Newt could rebound in time for Super Tuesday. He’s got two debates to help him.

Romney’s slime machin did a number on Newt Gingrich and the unscathed Santorum was the beneficiary. But for Romney’s slime machine, Newt Gingrich would be righteously running away with the nomination and Santorumwould be back home where he belongs.

Politics is dirty and Romney wants this nomination and presidency too badly to let Santorum go unscathed. It could be too late for his smear tactics to work on Santorum, but not too late for Newt Gingrich to rebound again, because he is far and above the most qualified and inspirational, anti-establishment candidate with bold ideas and solutions that his rivals are trying to copy, but neither can articulate because neither can speak from the heart, with knowledge, force and detail.

GO NEWT!

Did he support Newt before or after South Carolina?

Before. This was written before SC's primary. There are hundreds of articles out there mentioning Adelson and Gingrich long before South Carolina. This is dated January 10th. The South Carolina Primary was January 21st.

FTA: Sheldon Adelson, the son of a Boston cabdriver, made his millions as a casino mogul in Las Vegas and Macao, and $5 million of that wealth will help pay for ads and an online video that seek to halt Mitt Romney’s rise in South Carolina, where the contest moves after today’s New Hampshire primary."

Looks as if he just wants to back a winner - with strings attached.

I'd say he wants to back a winner, period. This isn't Adelson's first rodeo and this is not the first time he's supported someone running for president (McCain & Bush, at minimum).

I attended the caucus in Colorado this week. Newt made a grand total of one stop in the whole state, and it was in the the more liberal part. Romney, Santorum and Paul spent their time down here in the part of the state where conservatives live and vote.

We never got a call, saw an ad, saw a piece of mail - nothing from Newt. We were bombarded by Romney's stuff (yuck), and had several nice contacts with Santorum's people. Paul's people are all over the place on weekends. At the caucus, it was all about Santorum. People were not supporting Newt since he didn't bother to show up or make it known that he was running in our part of the state.

I wouldn't know Adelson from a smoldering hole in the ground. But I know better than to throw good money after bad if my candidate decided not to run in some states.

You are right..IF Newt loses...bye bye USA. However, I don’t think Santorum has a chance of winning the gop nomination and doubt he will do well in the south.
Also, remember he did not pick up any delegates during the tuesday election.
We will know more after super tues. I do guarantee you that after the Santorums voting record hits the airwaves he will go down faster than the Titantic. GO NEWT!

A few days ago no one thought he could win MN, MO, & CO either. He's talking about what's really at stake in this election, not just jobs or the national debt but our freedom.

It's the elephant in the room, that Obama is trying to trample the Constitution. But Santorum is addressing it and I think that's where his support is coming from, The People.

Disagree on one point.

Those three elections/caucuses he won did mean something, and the results proved he is now perceived as electable. Hence, his fund raising (from what I've read) is soaring and his national poll numbers now put him on top.

No secret that I support Santorum, but I could also vote for Gingrich.

The bigger picture is being missed by many here. The fact that Santorum has risen has not only taken some votes away from Gingrich, but it seems to also have taken votes away from Romney.

Take heart Gingrich supporters. While admittedly things don't look good for Gingrich, there's perhaps a bigger and more meaningful story unfolding, the decline of the Romney campaign.

Sorry for the late response, but I did some research and it appears that Adelson was a major SUPERPac donor. Which won't hurt Newt all that badly. But low and behold, he jumped over to Romney. Very interesting.......

Newt has been getting good donations and I think he still has a chance.

[I lean towards Newt over Santorum, but I am getting really sick of the circular firing squad antics between the Newt and Santorum zealots.

Both are vastly superior to Mitt, RuPaul and Obama. That is where the fire should be directed. Make the case why your choice is best, but it’s short-sighted to be tearing down the other conservative as part of trying to make that case. ]

I couldn’t agree more!

Unless you have found something else, Adelson hasn’t jumped to Romney. He only said that he would support Romney “if” he’s the nominee.

“This “Mr. Rogers” line is already getting old. Try saying the man’s name, Santorum, much less demeaning to him and those referring to him.”

Politeness has never been much of a virtue at FR. What Rick Santorum and his supporters receive is tame compared to Ron Paul and his supporters.

February 22nd and March 1st. Sadly, the March 5th one was cancelled. Sounds like NBC and Politico decided they didn’t want to give Newt another chance to rebound.
