A Religious War Out of Thin Air
Washington Post ^ | February 15, 2012 | Eugene Robinson

Posted on 02/15/2012 2:50:27 PM PST by neverdem

At ease, Christian soldiers. There is no "war on religion," no assault on the Catholic Church. A faith that has endured for thousands of years will survive even Nicki Minaj.

It never occurred to me to evaluate the Grammy Awards show on theological rectitude, but apparently we're supposed to be outraged at the over-the-top "exorcism" Minaj performed Sunday night. The hip-hop diva, who writhed and cavorted amid a riot of religious iconography, is accused of anti-Catholic bigotry -- and seen as an enemy combatant in an escalating "war on religion" being waged by "secular elites," which seems to be used as a synonym for "Democrats."

Seriously? Are we really going to pretend that Christianity is somehow under siege? That the Almighty would have been any more offended Sunday than he was, say, in 2006, when Madonna -- who could sue Minaj for theft of intellectual property -- performed a song during her touring act while being mock-crucified on a mirrored cross? While wearing a crown of thorns? Even at her show in Rome?

The "war on religion" alarmists are just like Minaj and Madonna in one key respect: Lacking a coherent point to make, they go for shock value.

Among the loudest voices, predictably, are those of the Republican presidential candidates. Guess who's to blame for the attack on all God-fearing Americans who go to church every Sunday to hear sermons about the sacrifice and triumph of Jesus Christ. Hint: He got in trouble four years ago, during his presidential campaign, for going to church every Sunday to hear sermons about the sacrifice and triumph of Jesus Christ.

President Obama is indeed waging a war on religion, Mitt Romney claimed last week at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Romney promised to rescind every "Obama regulation" that somehow "attacks our religious..."

Unfortunately, I see no other clear way forward. This is raw, unadulterated war. We are now under seige. People can couch it in whatever terms they choose, but it’s war. A rose by any other name.

It’s a “cold civil war” for now. For now.

Eugene Robinson is a vicious, soulless bit of human detritus so dead in spirit he can only defend his vapid belief system by mocking that of others. If you need any proof of his lack of humanity you need only look to his cruel and condescending commentary regarding the Santorum family’s terrible loss of a newborn child and their way of dealing with that loss within their family.
By the way, he jabbers on about Obambi going to church every Sunday and being condemned for it. I don’t recall hearing of any Republican candidate going to a “church” where the bigot in the pulpit called for God to damn America! If that’s what Robinson calls hearing sermons, “...about the sacrifice and triumph of Jesus Christ,” then he has some weird ideas about Christianity.

>>>Not in a nation with a 100 million scoped deer rifles.<<<<

Deer rifles are really only good for close-in shots when you’re in brushy terrain. I think I’ll go with my dad’s old M1 Garand... if it’ll take down a moose, it’ll probably do a good job on a communist at 300 yards.

Eugene Robinson wouldn’t recognize Jesus if the Savior was kneeling before him washing his feet.

You’re right! He’d think it was some sycophantic reader of the Washington Compost who agreed with his cramped view of the world.

Sinead Oconnor tore up a picture of Pope JPII on SNL back when in the eighties. The first I heard of it was this week.

anyone remember her?

Wonder how eugene would be writing this column if whatsherface had done a skit of african blacks, (like obama’s family,) capturing other blacks, including women and children, to sell to arab muslims to sell into slavery at auction blocks.
After all, it IS black history month.

And for those who haven’t read it, Dickens’ Tale of Two Cities is a worthwhile historical novel to read (or re-read with today’s world and the above in mind) to give a peek into that time.

Brutal oppression begins with, and relies on, severe population reductions. Since mass deaths, direct or incidental, are unpalatable and would inspire 100,000,000 rifles, the would-be tyrants figure collapsing the population replacement rate will do.

Lots of people are Catholic now.

Some of us always were. Some are realizing it for the first time. Some never were and never will be, but it's hitting too close to home to ignore.

The important thing for Christians is to figure out how to fight for their faith, even as they turn the other cheek and give unto for all the Caesar stuff.

Jesus never said it would be easy.

A REAL author would critique that “show” because of its banal cowardice by asking Manji why she didn’t do a number on islam????Maybe Mohamed and some goats?

NOOOOO lefties never makes THAT comment. Cowards! and worse, boring non-intellectuals.

That's where they are wrong. They'll get their civil war, but they won't win. Not in a nation with a 100 million scoped deer rifles.

There will be no political victory in the coming civil war as society collapses, the US economy and infrastructure shut down, and most urban centers are burned/pillaged to the ground. The majority of many, many, many casualties will be those dependent on Big Govt to take care of them: Democrat voters.
