A Ron Paul Finance Scandal?
American Spectator ^

Posted on 02/21/2012 8:31:47 PM PST by mnehring

Roll Call's Jonathan Strong reports that Ron Paul's office has a history of billing both US taxpayers and outside groups for the same flights -- and that he's been confronted about it:

In March 2005, David James called Rep. Ron Paul's (R-Texas) Congressional office for some documentation.

James's nonprofit group, the Liberty Committee, had paid for one of Paul's flights, and James needed a receipt or boarding pass to document the expense. He'd been pushing Paul for the paperwork and now, on the phone, he was "putting his foot down....

....David James wants Liberty Committee's money back, and is really angry about the whole thing:

On Feb. 15, James sent a fax to Paul's Clute office citing Roll Call's reporting and asking for about $10,000 in reimbursement for nearly 20 double-billed trips.

"It makes me damned angry that he would have taken the Liberty Committee, which was designed to work to pass liberty-oriented legislation and withstand any scrutiny and have contaminated it from the very beginning," James said.

"It never in a million years occurred to me that this man would be capable of what we can now see. So when there's mass hysteria and disbelief when this is published, I am not surprised. I was right with them."

As reported by Mark Levin yesterday.

It seems the recent 'double billing' taxpayers for expenses isn't an isolated situation but has been going on for a while. Don't forget Ron Paul was basically kicked out of the Libertarian party (and one of his staffers went to jail) over an embezzlement scandal back in 1988.

Snip....On Election Day scores of Lawyers, and Accountants raided the Ron Paul for President Campaign Headquarters and closed down the campaign operation. Campaign Manager Nadia Hayes was arrested by the Nassau Bay, TX Police Department and later convicted for embezzlement of roughly $140,000.

American Libertarian magazine November 1988 described the situation: "a bizarre twist tough-talking campaign manager Nadia Hayes was sacked the day before the election. And the much awaited last minute campaign media blitz largely failed to materialize. Paul campaign chair Burt Blumert and Paul campaign ghostwriter and direct mail fundraiser Lew Rockwell showed up... unannounced and unexpected (at HQ). Staff were told that they should leave... locksmiths turned up late in the day to change the locks on the office doors."

Give it a few minutes and the bots will be here spinning and parsing this information.

It will probably turn out that according to them that stealing the money was the fiscally responsible thing to do.

Submitting the same receipts for reimbursement twice?

He’s either ;

a) Corrupt

b) Suffering from Alzheimers

Either way, he’s done.

"Either/or" is the wrong function. Both are true. You also forgot "lazy", a "poor administrator" and "contemptuous of laws".

Except you forgot the rest of the story- nothing became of this on Newt because he was using his own plane and reimbursing the expense from the campaign as required by law (otherwise, it would be considered a donation and exceed the $2300 limit).

This is way different than double billing taxpayers and a PAC for the same expense (for apparently over five years).

(simplified just in case you are a Paul fan- Newt was renting his plane to his campaign. Paul double billing for expenses. Not even in the same category).

I believe that is why the “newsletters” have his name on them - he is an incompetent manager who did not keep control over published items with his name on them.

Not his fault. The newsletter author does his expenses too, he knows nothing about it, just cashes the checks.

Hopefully the liberal Paulbots will stop crossing over to vote in our primaries and not bother with politics anymore-at least not until their messiah runs again in another election.
