COLUMBIA, S.C. A newly proposed bill in South Carolina would remove a legal protection giving people the right to use deadly force.
Denmark Rep. Bakari Sellers said today he wants to remove the "stand your ground" provision from the state law that deals with personal property protections. Sellers' bill would strike language saying someone who isn't breaking the law and is somewhere he has the right to be, like where he works, has the right to use deadly force to protect himself or someone else.
The provision became law in 2006.
Sellers says he was inspired to introduce the bill after the death of Treyvon Martin. The black Florida teenager was shot to death by a Hispanic neighborhood watch captain who has not been charged and said he shot in self-defense.
The law does not protect those who engage in mutual combat with fists, and then resort to using a firearm to settle it.
It allows the elderly, the physically small and weak, and the handicapped to defend themselves against assault by predators.
Read it.
SC ping!
I really can’t see this bill going anywhere.
"Police ultimately* charged Dooley with manslaughter, openly carrying a firearm, and improper display of a firearm."
[*ultimately = TWO DAYS after the shooting]
Trayvon Martin was shot on February 26th and no one has be charged.
Thanks, the article I read was from 2010. Dooley should be tried from what I read. In the Treyvon Martin case, the shooter seems to have been stalking the victim (from the 911 tapes) and was told to back off. That is not right. Zimmerman seems in the wrong. However, this can not be portrayed honestly as a “civil rights outrage” as it is in the MSM.
Why the hell would you need a law to give your that power in the first place?
And why can a cop use deadly force to protect his life, and civilians can't? I'm not talking about making an arrest - just protecting his life. It's the exact same issue, a human being protecting their life with deadly force from attack. So why does the badge change the value of the human life, per se?
This is where the rubber of the 2nd Amendment meets the road. It is also affects our fundamental freedom to live as free men instead of slaves of the state.
We must fight encroachment on that freedom everywhere it is attempted.
Trayyvon Martin is being made into a "saint" by the media, the same way Gabrielle Giffords was. Well, he was the attacker. Read the real story. Zimmerman was defending himself.
We cannot allow the loss of our right to defend ourselves.
Sellers is also the first vice chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party.
He is an Alumnus of Morehouse College.
He is the son of civil right activist and professor Cleveland Sellers.
Would you have expected anything different?
Whats the difference between “following” and “stalking”?
If you’re doing neighborhood watch around your neighborhood, see someone suspicious and follow them to see what they are doing are you “stalking” them as you’re talking to 911?
I’d say from a legal standpoint they both were in the right at first. When Z broke it off and headed to his car - his story - they both were still in the right.
The question then becomes “What happened next?”
Bakari T. Sellers is a Democratic member of the South Carolina House of Representatives
I personally HATE all Democrats .Is that a HATE crime?
And I know, or at least hope I know, that no matter how un-"saintly" Gabrielle Giffords may be, you don't mean to imply that putting a bullet in her head somehow justified.
Absolutely. Being soft or more “compassionate” towards blacks who commit crimes actually means not giving a rat’s behind about black crime VICTIMS, and the rest of the law abiding black majority, as most black crime is black on black.
One of the best ways for a racist police officer, judge or parole board to harm the black community would be to go easy on more black criminals, which means making it harder on the law abiding black majority.
LOL!
Save the bandwidth .. your intuition was correct
“The idea that we are PASSIONATE about eliminating ‘bullying’ in Schools, but we want criminals to have their way with the populace, by disarming them?”
They’re not passionate about bullying as such. The recent agitation is specifically about gays. Since they don’t care as much about guns as other groups, for whatever reason, I don’t think you’ll get em on board.
“Is it just me, or does it seem to be crazy to base public policy on a few selected incidences?”
Doctors call it the There Oughtta Be A Law Syndrome.
“Bakari Sellers”
LET....ME....GUESS....
Well I assume he’s a Democrat. What else can we infer from his moniker?/s;)
Damn democrats, always dancing in the blood of the dead.
