Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, musician Bob Dylan and astronaut John Glenn were among a select group of 13 Americans named by President Obama Thursday as the latest recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.

The medals, which the president will present to recipients at a White House ceremony, recognize individuals who have made "especially meritorious contributions" to the security or national interests of the Unites States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant endeavors, according to the White House's Thursday announcement.

"These extraordinary honorees come from different backgrounds and different walks of life, but each of them has made a lasting contribution to the life of our nation," Mr. Obama said in a release. "They've challenged us, they've inspired us, and they've made the world a better place. I look forward to recognizing them with this award."

Other than Ms. Albright, Mr. Dylan and Mr. Glenn, Mr. Obama also named Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, former Israeli President Shimon Peres, Novelist Toni Morrison, former University of Tennessee Women's Basketball coach Pat Summit, worker's rights leader Dolores Huerta and civil rights leader John Doar.

Dunno about whether Dylan or Glenn did much either way vis a vis freedom, but it’s an oxymoron about Albright.

After all, Maddie has done such a magnificent job with North Korea. /s

I'd think past holders of the Medal would be irate at the depreciation of its value, much like the Nobel has become a caricature of itself.

The Medal of Freedom means about as much as the Nobel Peace Prize now.

named by President Obama

Gee, what an honor.

Dylan for being spaced out, Glenn for being out in space, and Halfbright for not knowing the difference.

I think as anti-American as Zer0 is even he knows he’d better not name Hanoi Jane.

I’m appalled! John Glenn sold us out to the ComChi for a ride on the shuttle! Remember when Fred Thompson was investigating a scandal Gore had gotten into over questionable campaign contributions? Glenn’s reward for obstructing the hearings was a flight on the space shuttle. He became the oldest astronaut, ever!

You're right, his shuttle stunt was ridiculous and one might say he sold out for it, I'm one.

I love that parody where Little Kim calls her “the mother of our bomb.” Love as in gallows humor; there really is nothing funny about it when you ponder the situation.

"Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright told an unusual story on Tuesday about her days as a top diplomat.

While unveiling her new pin jewelry exhibit, Albright talked about a trip to Korea a while back. A Korean foreign minister thought he wasn’t on the record and said he loved it when Albright would visit Seoul because of the nice relationship the two had.

He also mentioned that when he gave me a hug I had very firm breasts,” Albright said with a chuckle.

“Questions were asked about whether or not he should resign but I said I’ve got to have somewhere to put those pins!”
