Scientists Discover New Inflammatory Target

Scientists from Queen Mary, University of London have found a new therapeutic target to combat inflammation.

The research, published in the journal Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences, revealed tiny organelles called primary cilia are important for regulating inflammation. The findings could lead to potential therapies for millions of people who suffer from arthritis.

Dr Martin Knight who led the research at Queen Mary's School of Engineering and Materials Science said: "Although primary cilia were discovered more than a century ago, we're only beginning to realise the importance they play in different diseases and conditions, and the potential therapeutic benefits that could be developed from manipulating cilia structure and function."

The researchers investigated the role of primary cilia in inflammation. They took cartilage cells and exposed them to a group of inflammatory proteins called cytokines, specifically interleukin-1 (IL-1), to see whether there were any changes to the primary cilia.

"When we exposed the cells to IL-1, in just three hours the primary cilia showed a 50 per cent increase in length," he said.

"But what was most interesting was when we treated cells to prevent this elongation of the cilium. The cartilage cells had a greatly reduced response to the inflammatory proteins and were therefore not as inflamed. This suggests a brand new therapeutic target for inflammation."...

There’s a new product called Anatabloc which some folks — including pro golfer Fred Couples — are touting as providing relief against inflammatory-related conditions: http://anatabloc.com/

Doesn’t an inflammatory response happen for a valid reason?

If we prevent the response, couldn’t something even worse happen? Unintended consequences...

Correctomundo, but sometimes immune systems go out of whack,
and start tearing up good normal tissue (think rheumatoid
arthritis, glomerulonephritis, rheumatic heart disease,
autoimmune thyroiditis, etc.) So it’s a good idea to
know what how the immune set-up is effected by the
functions of “primary cilia” Who knows, maybe we can
manipulate them to enhance the immune system so if we
have some type of overpowering infection (bacterial, virus,
or even cancers) we can knock out the “offending” agent...

All in all, another reminder of how much we know, how much
we didn’t know, and man!, are we complex or what.

I understand. I had hyperthyroidism due to some autoimmune problem. Wouldn't it be wonderful if rheumatoid arthritis could have as easy a treatment as my condition did.

I must say, I love the word “organelles”. I had to look it up of course.

Inflammatory bowel disease including Crohn’s have no known antigen. The body attacking itself so to speak.

And here I was thinking that somebody had invented a new incendiary substance to use as a fun rifle target!

My immune system was "out of whack" for years. I suffered from increasingly serious allergies to quite a few substances. I took shots twice a week -- to no avail. I took many anti-histamines, steroids etc. The condition required that I wear a mask outdoors and also indoors around our pets. I stayed up a good part of the night coughing. I was miserable.

Then I went on a low-carb diet (no sugar, no potatoes, no flour et al). Within a few weeks my allergy symptoms began to abate. Now, after a few months, they are entirely gone. Seems like a miracle. No more medication, shots or masks. I can go outdoors in high allergy season and have no effects.

What we eat determines, in a large manner, how our various metabolic systems act. After much research, I now know why the sugars/carbs were causing my system to be a constant hyper-inflammation state.

By the way, I am also now free of my blood-pressure medication.

YEP, I’m probably similar to you....currently combatting candida (as my Naturapath thinks is the problem)...and I know sugar and flour are problems for me.
