The American Red Cross says power outages created by recent storms in the East and Midwest cut blood donations, which were already low this summer. In June there was a nationwide shortfall, with donations down more than 10% across the country.
"We are asking people to please call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit us at redcrossblood.org to find a way to donate if they can," said Stephanie Millian, Red Cross director of biomedical communications. "We need people's help."
One group that would like to help, but legally can't, may be moving one step closer to eligibility. Since the 1980s, when the AIDS epidemic decimated their community, gay men -- or MSMs (men who have sex with men) as they are called by federal agencies -- have not been allowed to donate blood. In June, a group of 64 U.S. legislators led by Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Illinois, and Sen. John Kerry, D-Massachusetts, sent a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services encouraging it to move forward with a study that may lead to the end of the decades-old ban.

I had a major operation a few years ago. My surgeon insisted that I do an autologous blood donation. He does not trust the blood supply.
If you know you are having surgery, donate your own blood.

My grandson was permanently banned from donating Plasma because one time when they were asking the usual questions that he could always say no to, he forgot about having his wisdom tooth pulled. So the next time he told them and they banned him FOREVER for lying to them the week before.
Does anyone remember the incident back in the early 80’s when AIDS was pretty new to most of us, when a homosexual on an interview show said that he and his contacts were going to give blood to get the disease into the straight community? He said, IIRC, that it was the only way the government would fund research.
Our church has been holding blood drives where you donate to the person’s code. Does that blood go to the specified person, or only get credited to the amount they draw down, reducing the patient’s cost?

The problem is they are going after gay person’s blood instead of trying to get the lazy people who can give blood to get off their butts and get down to the local red cross. However in your case, it is stupid to stop people stationed in Europe to not give blood...Perhaps that needs to be looked at too.

My son had minor surgery years ago, and my wife asked me to do an autologous donation for his surgery. I think this is a good thing to do, rather than take even a small chance of getting bad blood.
If this change goes through, will this make people have more confidence in the blood supply, or less confidence that the blood supply is safe?

They pulled the same lie to push homo foster care. Homos make up one percent of society and are not going to do anything for the blood supply but put it in danger. Same with homo foster care and adoption.
