WASHINGTON — Parents are urged to teach their kids to speak up if they witness school bullying in new ads that target an issue that top Obama administration officials vow to make a national priority.
long-term campaign featuring television, print and web ads was unveiled Monday and will start running in October. The campaign is a joint effort by the Ad Council, a nonprofit that distributes public service announcements, and the Free to Be Foundation, a group that includes entertainers Marlo Thomas, Alan Alda and Mel Brooks.
one television ad, two girls are seen bullying a schoolmate, mocking her appearance and telling her that nobody likes her. A fourth girl looks on but doesn't intervene.
"Every day, kids witness bullying," says a narrator. "They want to help, but don't know how. Teach your kids how to be more than a bystander."
Online and print ads will warn parents that their kids regularly encounter negative messages such as "you're worthless" and "everybody hates you."
ads were unveiled Monday at an annual anti-bullying summit hosted by the Department of Education in Washington, where lawmakers, educators and government officials convened to develop a national strategy aimed at ensuring a safe, healthy learning environment for students. One thing is certain. When our family was homeschooling the number of homeschoolers barely topped 100,000 ( likely less). Since the late 80s it has grown to be 4% of the school aged population. It is likely double that since government numbers regarding homeschoolers a notoriously unreliable and deliberately reported on the unrealistically low side.
This means that, at NO COST TO YOU or and other NEIGHBOR, parents have decided that this is the best way to educate and rear their children.
On the other hand....There is NO NO NO NO NO evidence or studies of any kind proving that government schools are in any way effective. We spent up to nearly $30,000/year/child and NO ONE, absolutely NO ONE knows if government schools teach anything because afterschooling and preschooling has NEVER been measured.
Yeah! I am shouting. Who wouldn't? That is a LOT of tax money collected under the threat of armed police action, sheriff sale, garnished wages, closed businesses, and ruined lives for a program of UNKNOWN effectiveness. Parents sacrifice mightily taking on high mortgages and long commutes to work hoping to find a so-called “good” government school and NO ONE has ever determined if these schools are, indeed, good!

You are the one with character issues and they are on display everytime you post - which explains your paranoia about identifying yourself. Wintertime may have good reason not to want to hand out identifying information on the internet. I don’t blame her. I’ve got a first name + last name combination that is pretty much unique. I also work in an industry where I don’t really want my political postings known, and my husband’s job prospects could be affected.
I’ve been stalked on the internet, I know people who have been. It’s not funny to joke about. I know people who had random strangers call up their house and leave threatening phone messages after tracking them down on the internet, and that was over a game. Don’t claim it’s a fantasy. It’s not, and it’s not funny.
Gabz, I’ve interacted with you before and I respect your posts most of the time. That said what you said to wintertime is very ignorant. There are many good reasons why someone might not want their identity traceable on the internet.
If I posted my actual last and first name, people could with a single google search identify where I live, the last place I lived, my husband’s name, my daughter’s name, my profession, possibly my employer, and my fledgling attempts to break in as a writer. They could use that information to destroy me if they chose.
It’s not about whether YOU want to identify wintertime. It’s about whether Joe LurkerTroll who comes across this thread six months from now thinks it might be fun. Information on the internet just doesn’t disappear. I’ve seen real people get actually hurt by information posted about them online.
Want an example? Look at that “Adam” guy who posted the creepy Chic-fil-a harrassment video. How long did it take for his life to be exposed, picked through, and destroyed? Yes, he asked for it, but that’s a cautionary tale right there.
Disagree with wintertime’s tactics, conclusions, rhetoric, lifestyle, beliefs, stories, and strategies, but don’t dismiss her fears for her own security.
You are right, Jen, it is not funny to be stalked or get threatening calls - I know because both things have happened to me because of the nature of the work I did, even before the internet. I have had people who disagree with me follow me here to FR from other websites - those are the only people I have ever hit the abuse button on. Having been there, done that, and proudly wear the T-shirt, fear doesn’t cut it with me. As for a unique name combination - that doesn’t fly with me either, I’ve lived with that all my life.
I worked in the political arena, thus my politics were always known, so I have nothing to hide and never did. If anyone is so afraid for their jobs they can’t post openly and honestly about their belies - they really should not be participating in political forums.
Wintertime posts all kinds of personal information about herself and her family, yet can not and will not back up any of it. Please give me one good reason why anyone with any amount of intelligence would take anything she says with more than a grain of salt.
Don’t take it at face value at all. I automatically assume anything anyone tells me on the internet is exaggerated at best unless they offer proof. Wintertime can say anything she wants. So can I. So can you. If her stories seem preposterous, assume they’re lies and move on.
I recently went back to employed status instead of contractor but I work from home, remotely. I have phone contact with my coworkers and see them perhaps once a year. That means I’m really sensitive to what could be found out about me by Googling. I’m not there to defend myself. I kept a blog for a few years related to an online game and had to make sure I kept my identity under wraps. Political blogs, same thing. Most of the folks I work with are probably fairly conservative. It only takes one going to my boss and claiming I’m goofing off during work time to get me canned.
I also have lots of friends I met online first. Over a dozen I met on this forum who I have now met in real life. My husband, who I met on this forum. I did tell him my real name eventually... but I’m still not going to post my real name. Maybe if it was “Smith”. But it’s not.
Jen - I also respect your posts as a general rule. However, in this instance we do not agree in the least.
Wintertime seems to take great pleasure in belittling anyone who disagrees with her and making outrageously false accusations against others and very few people are willing to publicly call her upon them. When those few of us do call her on it, she runs screaming to her disciples about how we are making personal attacks - while ignoring what she has called all o us at one time or another.
If she doesn’t want to answer honest questions - she needs to refrain from bragging about unprovable things when it comes to herself and her family - in fact she really should stop posting anything about her personal life unless and until she can back up anything she says.
That so many people here venerate her is beyond me.
What happened is that she was allowed to scrub in and be a ‘retractor bitch’ in a surgery. For most of the surgery, she was asked to hold back a woman's breast as it was removed. Then she was allowed to place on clamps on major arteries, cut out temporary stitches, and put in staples. Under the eye of a surgeon. In a teaching hospital.
Unusual? Not at all. Other students had similar experiences. One delivered an afterbirth. Another helped to cut off a diseased limb. Many others held back tissue, cut out temp stitches, etc. One picked up part of a skull as it was removed. (That was in a VA hospital).
Out of the 140 in her class, probably 3/4 scrubbed in, and of that amount over 1/2 touched a patient. Her’s wasn't even the best story. (IMO, the 1st day med student delivering an afterbirth was the most amazing)
Things have changed since you went through dental school. Her experiences were and are common. This week begins her third week of medical school and she will begin regular, physical contact with incoming patients. It's how things are done now.
Character is revealed by the friends that one keeps. Who are the friends of the government school thugs and their supporters and friends? Acorn, OWS, Bill Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn, homosexual fascists, Marxists, and the Democrat Party.
After the behavior of the Wisconsin teachers and the millions of dollars of damage that they did to their capitol, any rational person criticizing government education would be wary and careful to maintain their anonymity. We have also seen how the homo-fascist thugs went after people's jobs who dared, even in the most mild manner, to support Christian beliefs and the education thugs are riding around their hip pocket. The education thugs also share a big back pocket with the Democratic Party and we know how many unusual deaths are associated with those Marxist power players.
Finally...I am not as much concerned for my own well-being as I am for my children and grandchildren and their health, safety, and their jobs. We should remember that the Democratic thugs didn't kill the Clintons or their daughter, it was two friends who died suspiciously. Education union thugs and their Democratic supporters, who may be active posters or merely lurkers here on Free Republic, are capable of **anything**. We have the visible proof of the viciousness of government school teacher thugs. We have seen that and Wisconsin citizens are paying the bill.
As for those who are bullying me in an attempt to reveal personal information....well...their character is on full display for all to see.
Please remember Wisconsin. This is the **character ** of the people teaching our nation's children and this is the character of the people defending these socialist-entitlement schools. These are the people who are supposed to be protecting your precious children from the bullying of others. Don't bet on it.
