Missouri GOP Senate Candidate should withdraw from Race Now (Vanity)
August 19, 2012 | pistolpackinpapa

Congressman Todd Aikin, the GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate from Missouri should withdraw from the Missouri Senate Race immediately over his stupid statement he made today re: "legitimate rape". To not do so, will assure six more years for Claire McKaskill in the U.S. Senate. What he said, in essence, when asked about abortion, was that a "legitimate rape" rarely causes pregnancy. Now, that comment is going viral over the internet.

I witnessed, first-hand, in 1990 how a "rape gaffe" by GOP candidate for Governor of Texas, Clayton Williams, who had a wide lead in the polls at the time, caused him to lose the Governor's Office to Ann Richards; in GOP-Red Texas.

Many of us Conservatives understand what he was saying and are in agreement. But, it was a stupid thing to say. For the sake of this Election and control of the U.S. Senate, Aikin should withdraw immediately or "Turn out the lights; the party's over.

About 1 percent of the American people oppose abortion in the event of rape. Yeah, that will win a statewide election. Not.

There were zero votes to be mined by Akin on the subject of abortion. People who vote on this issue know whom to support in the Missouri senate race.

This interview was stupid, ill-advised, and possibly fatal.

Conservatives from coast-to-coast deserve better than this poor judgment. Who the Hell is advising this guy?

Pull a Torricelli, force him to step down, and replace w Steelman - female who has already won statewide.

Akim has forfeited this slot. We MUST have this senate seat.

We DESERVE better than this.

Do NOT allow this jackass to go to Tampa.

With an 11 point lead all Aikin had to do was play a little rope a dope until November.

The 11 points was in a single poll (the only one since he won the nomination) and it's likely his real lead was never that big.

About 1 percent of the American people oppose abortion in the event of rape.

To be honest it's about 20%, but that still means that if that position it's a major focus of your campaign nationally, or in almost all states, it's political suicide.

Welcome to FreeRepublic. Todd Aiken I have known personally for over 24 years. I hardly know you at all.

Rapes are unlawful so there is no such thing as a "legitimate rape".

Well that explains why he claimed it didn't result in pregnancy.

But some people support his view that there is legitimate rape.

Never mind a bet.

The media will rush out a poll after this.
I say he leads, what say you?

You might want to look up the word "legitimate" in a dictionary some time. It has more than one sense. Which one was intended ought to be apparent to anyone willing to exercise common sense.

DAMN IT! I agree that if Biden’s gaffes get a pass, this guy’s should to, but there is TOO MUCH AT STAKE here for us to be screwing around with people who make idiotic statements like this. McCaskill was dead in the water until this happened. How many seats do we need and how many are we likely to win, guys? I know Tester is going down. Who else?

“The media will rush out a poll after this.

Only if he says someone hacked into his twitter account and typed the words “legitimate rape”
Otherwise the only thing I could think of that could be worse is if he twittered boxer shorts photo to the world.

If I was a DU troll, I would not be asking for Todd Aikin to step aside.

Sure you would. Especially when you woke up this morning and realized that you were 11 points down in the polls.

The average American voter is NOT an intelligent voter. Most of them are so dumb they shouldn't even be allowed to vote.

Ahhh -- spoken like a true Demo[c]rat.

So then you are admitting that this interview could not have hurt him or helped him. So what's the big deal???

This interview was stupid, ill-advised, and possibly fatal.

No -- your post is.

Conservatives from coast-to-coast deserve better than this poor judgment.

Conservatives from coast to coast aren't voting in the Missouri Senate Race.

This group of dramatic-chipmunks sees a shallow opportunity to try to knock off this guy and maybe get him replaced by the candidate they thought should have been the primary winner. So they are demanding that he leaves the race.

Really cheap stunt.

What bullshit.

Aiken has shown himself to be a buffoon, and utterly without cunning. We need the seat he's running for and he can't win it.

Any politician who can't refrain from making this comment doesn't deserve to be elected to anything. He'll probably lose by 20 points.

I’m thinking Connie Mack will oust Nelson in Florida. I believe Allen will win in Virginia. I believe that Tommy Thompson will take the open Democrat seat in Wisconsin and the GOP will take the open Democrat seat in North Dakota. Hope this encourages you a little bit.

Exactly. Unfortunately there are many here at FR that want such pure candidates they don’t mind losing these races. It’s insanity.

We would have been done with Harry Reid right now if not for the absurdity here and elsewhere. Sometimes you have to be willing to take a 70% conservative and win then take a 100% conservative and lose putting a 100% liberal in power. Many Freepers are blind to this. Those that say they won’t vote for Romney are doing the same thing...guaranteeing Obama a win and probably a Supreme Court that is 7-2 liberal by the time he is done. They just don’t get it.

2012 is indeed the year FR became a parody of itself.

How very true - and so sad. We used to laugh at the dims with their unhinged "Bush Derangement Syndrome". Now the same phenomena seems to be sweeping through here. Rational thought and a sense of perspective is completely lost.

These people need to turn the computers off and get outside once in a while...

You might want to look up the word "legitimate" in a dictionary some time

legitimate, le-jlt'-te-mate a. born in marriage (Samuel Johnson, A Dictionary of the English Language, 1755)

The Shorter OED gives a second meaning of "conformable to law or rule; lawful, proper".
It also notes that it was sometime used in a transferred sense of "real" as opposed to "spuriuous". but notes that usage as obsolete.

Also think GOP will take retiring Ben Nelson’s seat in Nebraska but will lose the retiring RINO Snowe seat in Maine. Also outside chance of taking Dem Sherrod Brown seat in Ohio

He misused ONE WORD, "legitimate."

He also said "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” The underlying implication being that pregnant rape victims are liars and not actual victims of rape.

Too late. This is also FAR worse than “Macaca”, how do you un-explain the comments that he made? I mean he went so far into the realm of awkward and bizarre that really there’s no coming back. He needs to step down, like tomorrow, because this will follow him all the way to November, and if he said something this stupid in August, you can be sure he’ll say something at least equally ridiculous at another point in time.

That was possibly the worst thing he said.

“The female body has a way to just shut the whole thing down.”

Is this guy serious? Are we living in the 1500’s or are we living in 2012? When basic first-year college biology students know that a woman can be aroused and even have an orgasm while being raped, this guy comes out with idiot-speak from The Dark Ages.

This fits into every single stereotype the left love to throw out and as Ryan is out there doing a great job on talking about the economy and Medicare and why Obama shouldn’t be brought back, this clown allows the media to flip the script and focus on something completely superficial.

It was a horrible, horrible gaffe, I just sat and stared at the television without my mouth open after seeing it. I just don’t know, I felt like that photo of the Jaguars fan shrugging, not sure how to explain what he’s seen.
