PHOENIX – Don't have a decent command of the English language?

Then forget about running for public office in Arizona – or even being appointed to one.

In a decision with statewide implications, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that candidates who are not proficient in English cannot even try to become an elected or appointed official. The justices said the requirement, which has existed since territorial days, is justified.

Alejandrina Cabrera is an American citizen who was born in Yuma, but raised in Mexico for a number of years before returning to Arizona at 17. She admits that her Spanish is much stronger than her English, but says can speak as well as she needs to.

Arizona’s law is similar to the “natural born citizen” requirement in the federal Constitution.

I was about to suggest that if “you can’t speak the language of our country” you can’t work for that govt. In Yuma’s case the language of the countrymen is Spanish more often than not. ...

.....which gets back to the official language debate and the idea that you must speak English to succeed. Or exist. Or prosper. Or survive.

If a candidate speaks of “legitimate rape” is he proficient?

The NY Post reported a Bronx latina pol looted tax-funded nonprofit and got sex romps on the taxpayers' dime.

NY state Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera (D-Bronx) is accused of using a phony tax-funded nonprofit as her personal ATM, establishing a pattern of racketeering, installing her various lovers in tax-paid jobs (1) to wine and dine her, (2) to bed her down, (3) to sign off on payments to her relatives, and, (4) to siphon off tax dollars for her campaigns.

Rivera steered hundreds of thousands of tax dollars to the poverty-stricken Bronx hellhole---via the Bronx Council for Economic Development, controlled and funded by the Rivera political clan.

Rivera colluded with her family to suckup tax dollars in numerous cases of govt fraud. Campaign-related expenses were charged to the Bronx nonprofit in violation of the law; 2007 records alone list a $1,000 payment for an “Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera Grant Fundraiser” and Naomi Rivera's $100 donation to the "Committee of 100 Democrats" barbecue.

These revelations follow media exposes that the self-serving Rivera put young lover, Tommy Torres, on her state legislative payroll in a no-show $1,100 a week job as a “full-time community-relations director” at the same time he worked full-time as a Brooklyn public school gym teacher and coach.
