AKIN WILL WITHDRAW: WHAT HAPPENS NOW? (return of Sarah Steelman?)

AKIN WILL WITHDRAW: WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

Mike Flynn

........

At some point before 5pm CDT tomorrow, Akin will file papers to formally withdraw his name from the ballot. I realize today Akin was defiant and said he wasn't a "quitter." His supporters claim he will stay in the race because he views his candidacy as "providential", but this is just the bluster before the end. Everyone is entitled to 24 hours to try to right their ship, but Akin did nothing today to cauterize the wound. When Reince Priebus, Ann Coulter, NRSC and Tea Party Express are all united in saying you should quit, you've pretty much run out of options.

..............

After Akin withdraws the decision to name a replacement falls to the 15 members of the state GOP central committee. Speculation is currently focused on two candidates Akin defeated in the recent GOP primary; businessman Jim Brunner and former State Treasurer Sarah Steelman.

Brunner had the backing of many GOP insiders because of his ability to partially self-fund his race. Steelman had the backing of Sarah Palin. They both lost to Akin in large part because Sen. McCaskill ran a lot of ads "attacking" him for being too conservative. (Think of it as a Republican dog-whistle.) Among the two, Steelman probably has the edge as the GOP may want to put the Akin debacle to rest by nominating a woman. It is also expected that Palin would campaign aggressively for Steelman, which would be helpful as 2012 is turning out to be a base election....

Here's my prediction: Ann Wagner will be the replacement for Todd Akin. Mark it down and congratulate me when I'm proven right. ;^)

Will that be in more or less than 24 "business hours"?

The FUnniest thing is that not only did McCaskill attempt to get Akin to win the primary but yesterday she sounded soooooo forgiving of Akin. Yeah, right. She just wants him to stay in. Of course, later she would be slamming him big time.

His supporters claim he will stay in the race because he views his candidacy as "providential"...

Huh? Does Akin believe God told him to run? If so, then he better notice that God is loudly YELLING at him to withdraw.

It should go by votes. If first place is disqualified, it should go to second place. If second place can’t or doesn’t want it, it should go to third and so on and so on.

YES! Did she place 2nd in that primary? If so, she would be the obvious choice. I can hope.

IF that doesn’t tell you right there, when your OPPONENT is defending you against your big ole mean PARTY, what the hell do you THINK is gonna happen??? Please GOD this is true and he has people on the phone/at his door demanding 24-7 that he GET OUT.

she was third in the primary, but it was close all the way around and it seems essential that they put a woman in to neutralize all the ugliness that Akin created with his comment.

Picking Brunner or Steelman will just piss off the supporters of the one not selected and fracture the party. I expect that the Missouri GOP will pick someone else.

Perhaps it's my fervid imagination but doesn't Akin look like he could be the brother of Exeter from "This Island Earth?"

For anybody who still thinks Akin should stick it out...one name: Clayton Williams. Williams was a slam dunk to beat Ann Richards for the Texas governorship UNTIL he made a rape joke and ultimately lost.

Whoever replaces him must be pro-life without exceptions.

There is no point at this time for conservatives to dilly-dally with GOP moderates. Abortion is murder regardless of the cause of pregnancy. Being pro-life with exceptions is being pro-death.

How can there be ANYONE who thinks he should stick it out. I don’t care what kind of stellar voting record he had, he will not have a chance to place a dang vote because he is going to LOSE. Someone has to make him see reason, but i saw on Twitter that an unnamed Repub insider said “It’s hard to argue with an idiot.” Someone has to get through to him before 5 today, it’s essential he GET OUT.

If the GOP were smart ...and i have my doubts.....they would have the new candidate accept the spot vs Claire Mc Moron and mention that her stance MUST obviously be the same as Atkins since she supported him after the comments. Watch that stupid idiot squirm....Thoughts anyone?

I hope this is based on some real inside information. Aikin just cut a new commercial begging forgiveness that should air today. They played it on the Bill Bennett show. I have a scary feeling the S.O.B. is going to try and fight through this.

I’m already reading leftwing sources rejoicing in the fact that Akin would also harm Romney’s chances. I really HOPE Breitbart is correct about Akin withdrawing. Is Akin married? Perhaps someone needs to talk to his wife about the world of HELL they are about to enter if Akin doesn’t withdraw.

Ugh, ugh, puke. That reminds me of the Allen "apology tour" back in 2006. Apology piled on retraction covered with contrition for weeks on end, only to have the newsers and the Webb campaign say in unison: "Allen has still not provided a satisfactory explanation for his apparently racist comment..."

You can't win on defense. An "apology" ad is equivalent to a concession speech. If Akin stays, all he will do between now and November is apologize to people who will refuse to listen to him. He's done.

“Dear Congress Akin-—I know there is a lot of pressure on you to quit but I strongly urge you to stick it out. You’ve got to show them that you’re not a quitter. Sincerely yours, Claire McCaskill.”

Thanks for the list. It seems having a woman replace Akin would be a good idea because any male candidate is going to get this mess dumped on them by the dims.
