I think so_real is right about a double standard, and chris37 is right about the potential consequences if Democrats figure out they can force Republicans out of races when a Democrat doing something similar would be supported by their own party. Look at all the feminists who swallowed hard and decided backing Bill Clinton was more important than defending an obviously manipulated intern.
My concern is this: we as conservatives say we are frustrated when the Republican leadership pushes RINOs on us. Now we have a strong social issues conservative who has a long track record of taking conservative positions in the state legislature and in Congress. Not only that, he clearly believes what he says, and isn't just talking the talk; he is himself a veteran, has several sons in the military, and has a strong track record on social, economic, and national defense conservative issues.
Now he said something really, really stupid, and the Republican leadership wants him to withdraw.
So we're going to fold our cards and go home and let the Republican establishment nominate a candidate who will probably be weak on social issues and may also be weak on economic and national defense issues? Show me that Tea Party fiery conservatives would put up with this if the national GOP tried this with somebody who wasn't a social issues conservative.
It wouldn't happen. Secular conservatives would be saying not only “No!” but adding some four letter words and lots of exclamation points to their “No!”

That is neither accurate nor fair.
What is both accurate and fair is that the lack of conservative support for Akin could easily become a self-fulfilling prediction.
I spent some time today with our county's local Republican political leadership who, somewhat to my surprise, tell me that most Republicans they talk to want Akin to withdraw.
I live in Missouri, my county which voted overwhelmingly for Santorum, and we have a strong social conservative presence in our local Republican leadership. These aren't RINOs or even moderate Republicans — the concern is that Akin has been so badly damaged that he can't recover.
I need to listen to that, and if the polls and fundraising numbers don't change quickly, Akin needs to be listening too.
Suddenly polls are being taken seriously.....how convenient.

I never even thought of voting for Santorum because most knew he was only in it to split the conservative vote to enable Romney to win the nomination.
Will Akin give us McCaskill like Santorum gave us Romney and Huckabee gave us McCain?
Only time will tell.

No problem... speaking for myself, I`ve moved on... much as it would be far better to have a competitive candidate to take on McCaskill, Akin refuses to see reality and quit.
So, time to donate and encourage the money guys to direct funding toward candidates who have a real shot of winning.
It does no good to wring hands or devote another minute of energy to worrying over this clown when other, more viable candidates are out there. Akin won the primary and wants to have some fun campaigning, so why not? He has second place clinched. Yay for him.
What’s Newt got to do with Akin?
Is he standing behind him too? If he is, we can add him to the list as well.
My point was that Newt did more to divide the conservative vote against Romney than did Santorum.

All party associations are compromises. However one chooses to define them does not make them thralls. Santorum was a Senator, he had to vote for some things he didn't want to get others that he wanted more. By your definition, simple GOP membership therefore qualifies for being a RINO.

Newt entered every primary debate telling the viewers that everyone up there on the stage would be better than Obama and he would support whoever won the nomination. He was more or less cheerleading each candidate's strengths.
Santorum, on the other hand, took shots at whichever conservative candidate was ahead and facing Romney. And the attacks he did make against Romney were that he is actually worse than President Obama and we cannot afford Romney as our nominee.
Santorum's attacks against Romney (the few that he made against the man) were attacks that would make him look hypocritical for ONE having endorsed the man previously and TWO endorsing the man again after saying those things.
I really don't see how you can say Mitt Romney is uniquely UNQUALIFIED to run against Obama and then endorse the man once all his conservative opponents have left the stage. No credibility. I saw that lack of credibility before the primary. Unfortunately others still do not see it. Newt's primary message was replacing Obama with either of these primary candidates.
Santorum's message was "conservatism"
And once again, Santorum endorses Mitt Romney.
It was all a plan.
Unlike Santorum, Akin was not intentionally handing McCaskill a victory but that's exactly what he's doing.

Umm, yeah... it's getting to be that way.
It's a shame. Akin has an EXCELLENT record. I really believe in all that he stands for. Problem is, he's become politically toxic.
He's sort of like the Vietnam War.
We were winning the war
But we lost it politically.
That's where we are with Akin.
Unfortunately, the enemy is not on the other side of the world this time. The commies are in our own country and they are bringing us down. So, withdrawal is not an option and neither is defeat.
We need to sacrifice Akin for someone who can win it for us.
That's my opinion. Ultimately it's up to the people of Missouri.
That is precisely the problem.
I think there are a lot of Akin supporters who would be much more willing to accept a replacement if we could be absolutely sure the alternative would be a solid pro-life, pro-military, social issues conservative.
Akin voters voted for Akin for a reason.
I have nothing personal against the Republican state committee, but let's be honest -- recent Republican leadership stances, as well as the nomination of Romney with strong establishment GOP support, have not helped build trust by social conservatives in the Republican leadership.
I believe Akin is a good man, find myself agreeing with Mike Hackabee of late, agree with what he said word for word on Fox News Sunday panel regarding Akin.
He mis spoke on rape, everything else Akin said was perfect.
On abortion he is absolutely right, regardless of incest/rape, the baby is still every bit precious.
But yes I know that is supposedly not what he is being attacked for, only for the rape comments.

Some Republicans are so afraid of saying what they really believe, to the point the Wonderful Gov Sarah Palin is banished from convention.
We should have stopped this kind of stuff years ago, but we allowed the media to do/say whatever it wanted.
We have folks on CNN and MSNBC etc, seemingly openly hoping that New Orleans will be hit by killer storm, so they can blame it on Republicans??? How twisted is that?

What about when/if Akin is replaced? Every liberal interviewer will try to catch next person in trap.
