Police At Chicago-Area High Schools Want To Bring Rifles To Campus

Despite the fact the city hasn't had any campus shootings, police in south suburban Plainfield, Ill., want to be prepared.
The Plainfield Police Department wants to keep a rifle in the offices of high school police officers, NBC 5 Chicago reported Wednesday.
“Unfortunately, in today’s society active shooter incidents are no longer something we see on TV," Police Chief John Konopek said. "They are reality.”
Plainfield is home to four high schools.
The department is specifically requesting to keep long guns such as AR15s in locked gun safes at the schools.
“We have found, through our training, officers are much better equipped to handle this type of incident utilizing a long gun … rather than a handgun,” Konopek said, according to NBC5.
A school board committee is scheduled to review the request next month.

Makes sense to me to be prepared for something awful to happen. The mere fact that the school police will be prepared for an assault will help to deter such assaults.

get the cops OUT of the schools. It has changed from serve and protect to prey on and persecute
Maybe they could bring back the concept of the school “shooting team”.
Why do police need them?
Why would anyone in their right mind send their child to a school which:
1. Requires a full time police presence
2. Has a police station in the school
3. Has an arms locker in the police station
4. Has police who are so intimidated that they require AR15’s?
There is so much wrong with this, where to begin?
That is not a school, it is a prison manned by prison guards.
Are you really that scared of someone shooting up a school (other then maybe a SWAT team during ‘Collateral damage’) to allow armed government guards at schools? Ya know, I grew up during the cold war and that is exactly what we were told to defend against!.
Guns are illegal in Illinois? I’m sure that will come as a shock to the millions of gunowners in Illinois.
Oh, but “assault weapons” in the hands of police and military go from “bad/evil” to “good” instantaneously.
We should always trust our magnanomous overlords!
They wouldn’t be where they are if they weren’t superior both morally and intellectually!

I learned at the after school center in NYC.
Misleading headline. Plainfield, Illinois, is not in the “Chicago area” any more than Bakersfield would be in the “Los Angeles area”. It’s a rural, downstate, small town.
Plainfield’s out in the country. Most country folk I’ve met know their way around a rifle pretty good.
Actually, they’re not, just in Chicago and a few suburbs. Even there, the ban is on handguns, not long guns.
