RIP....

Has to be regarded as one of the greatest Americans.

From the few times I’ve seen him on camera, it seemed to come through, what a genuinely good person he was.

That's embarrassing, but coming from NBC News I'm not surprised.

One of my FB "friends" just posted that headline, and I felt obligated to add a few choice words about my opinion of NBC News.

I can't believe they screwed up the headline of the passing of one of the great American heroes. I remember ... as a 10-year-old ... being glued to the TV set back then watching this historic event.

Just shaking my head at what NBC has become! Then again, it was NBC that caused me to quit watching the news, via the networks, over 20 years ago!

I’ll never forget that day. We watched it on TV. Back then it was fuzzy TV, but it was great. If I remember correctly, the actual landing was in the early morning, after midnight and we stayed up to watch it. I was in high school.

As this great man’s family has suggested -——— I’ll never ever be able to look at the moon again without winking. He was a man we will never forget and will always be proud of in our hearts.

Having a memory like a steel trap, I remember paying close attention to the TV for the moment when he would step off of the LEM and what he would say. When he said “That’s one small step for a man and one giant leap for mankind”, everyone in the room did not catch it because it was partly garbled, until Walter Cronkite repeated it about 15 seconds later.

Obama sent his condolences. I am sure that 1/2 staff will be announced Monday for the funeral day.

Lord Jesus, rest the soul of Thy servant Neil with Thy saints.

I’m with you, FRiend. I turned 14 a few months afterward. I remember VIVIDLY....watching those astonishing black-and-white television images from the moon; watching Neil, then Buzz, hop off that ladder onto the lunar surface.

It set the course of my life for many, many years to come.

RIP, sir. You lifted the spirits and hearts of all mankind. May God welcome you Home.

I remember I was five when I stood outside with everyone in the neighborhood on that summer night. We all gazed up, pointing and chatting about the moon, imagining we could see the astronauts, waling around up there.

That’s the point at which I became so proud to be an American. From then on, anything seemed possible.

I've read that the decisions who would go when were made not long before the flights but her statement about him being the first to walk on the moon is WHY I remembered meeting Armstrong. I had never heard of him before. Astronauts and NASA people were not strangers to our apt complex.

But that is what she said and it came true. In fact, when she said, "you just met the first man to walk on the moon," we asked which one... Elliot See was with him that day. He was later killed.

It was a fun interesting time to be living in Houston. John Glenn was the one I was around the most.

Great story.

It was Mercury, Gemini, Armstrong and all of the Apollo missions which pushed my interest in Astronomy. During that time I stared at the lunar surface with a $20 Sears telescope until my eyes crossed, building other small scopes as time and money would permit.

A few years ago, with help from family, I built a small optical observatory for astronomical imaging. One recent image is below.

I toast Neil Armstrong for a job well done. This one's for Neil and all those who made the landing possible!

Veil Nebula is an old supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus. It is the remains of cataclysmic explosion of star that exploded between 5,000 and 8,000 years ago. This nebula is about 1,860 light-years distance.
