A large quantity of maple syrup in a Quebec warehouse has gone missing.
Following a routine inventory check, the Federation of Quebec Maple Syup Producers found empty barrels at the St-Louis-de-Blandford warehouse, where the syrup is temporarily being held, suggesting that their contents had been emptied into other containers before being taken away for illegal distribution.
The warehouse held over 10 million pounds of maple syrup worth more than $30-million.

maple syrup tastes best when it is hot
Funky thing is that they are talking about empty, not water filled, barrels. Whoever handled them upon arrival at the facility would have noticed.
Bears.......stocking up for winter. I found some empty eggo boxes in the woods.
A) we don’t know their protocol for ‘accepting’ a barrel (could be a self-service kind of thing; if it’s organized as a co-op kind of thing it just may be)
B) the incoming acceptance ‘man’/men/etc could have been in on it (working under as assumed name etc.)
C) you can’t realistically move that much product out without being noticed ... that’s the thing about ‘bulk’ material in industry, the size usually precludes outright theft therefore I’m advancing alternate theories ...
D) Empty barrels were brought in (presumptively ‘filled’) and ‘empty’ (filled barrels) rolled out ... refer to ‘B)’ above ...

The Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers has just completed the acquisition of a factory warehouse in Laurierville, Centre-du-Québec.
With around 234,000 square feet of floor space, the new warehouse will allow the packaging and storing of more than 220,000 barrels of maple syrup, thus ensuring a continuous market supply, regardless of natures generosity.
Inventory support is central to controlling risk with maple syrup production. Ensuring a continual supply is essential for developing markets for maple products. For this reason, the Federation acquired its first warehouse in Saint-Antoine-de-Tilly in 2008. This warehouse is already full with 15 million pounds (23,000 barrels).
In 2010, an actuarial study determined that, on average, a strategic reserve of 40 million pounds would be necessary to avoid stock shortfalls due to poor harvests. Slightly more than 36 million pounds of maple syrup are currently stored in three different locations in Quebec. Last year, the Federation had to rent additional storage space to cater for the harvest surplus. The new Laurierville warehouse will now provide the required space to fulfil the Global Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve.

It looks to me they might have simply had an ‘inventory accountability problem’ and it came to light when they began to move stored product to the new facility.
I’ve got an alibi.
Unless some of this maple syrup can be traced to it’s origin, I’d be concerned of it’s intended use. Can’t rule it out! We’ve seen what fertilizer can do!

Have fond memories of sitting around the crackling pot belly stove in the parlor while our stinky wool socks dried and listen to the men regale stories of the north woods. Sgt. Preston shot a black bear and every year he added to the story to make it sound more adventurous. Good times.]
