Spain Recoils, as Its Hungry Forage Trash Bins for a Next Meal
NYT via CNBC ^ | September 25, 2012 | Suzanne Daley

On a recent evening, a hip-looking young woman was sorting through a stack of crates outside a fruit and vegetable store here in the working-class neighborhood of Vallecas as it shut down for the night.

At first glance, she looked as if she might be a store employee. But no. The young woman was looking through the day’s trash for her next meal. Already, she had found a dozen aging potatoes she deemed edible and loaded them onto a luggage cart parked nearby.

“When you don’t have enough money,” she said, declining to give her name, “this is what there is.”

The woman, 33, said that she had once worked at the post office but that her unemployment benefits had run out and she was living now on 400 euros a month, about $520. She was squatting with some friends in a building that still had water and electricity, while collecting “a little of everything” from the garbage after stores closed and the streets were dark and quiet.

Such survival tactics are becoming increasingly commonplace here, with an unemployment rate over 50 percent among young people and more and more households having adults without jobs. So pervasive is the problem of scavenging that one Spanish city has resorted to installing locks on supermarket trash bins as a public health precaution.

Winston Churchill: Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.

I guess starvation isn’t as big a public health problem, YET.

The problem is that socialism sounds great to the unthinking. Envy is a powerful human emotion, and what sounds better than taking money away from the rich and distributing it to the have not’s.

The fallacy lies in the fact that “money/wealth” is NOT a static fixed pot which is stable and permanent. Wealth must be created continuously to be available for sharing. Only real wealth creators are mining, agriculture, manufacturing and applied product development. And almost all engaged in those activities can be classified as rich. You discourage those wealth creators, and the pot available to share shrinks.

I’m sure the government of Spain could simply raise taxes on the rich to pay for the basic needs of these poor souls.

But she has some new shiny windmills (that provide nothing but feel-good vibes) nearby to tilt at.

Meanwhile, also in Spain...

In Spain, while the country mulls asking for a bailout from the European Central Bank, a whole other crisis is brewing. The relatively well-off Catalonia region, which includes the commercial hub of Barcelona, has announced that it will hold snap elections and a referendum to decide whether it should break away from Spain and form a separate republic. Many Catalans resent that their region pays more taxes and receives fewer government services than other regions where the economy is less robust.

The natural result of a country spending way too much and then running low on suckers willing to lend it money.

Fortunately we still have enough suckers today.

The young woman was looking through the day’s trash for her next meal. Already, she had found a dozen aging potatoes she deemed edible and loaded them onto a luggage cart parked nearby.

Simple solution for her:

(1) Find a man who has a good job.

(2) Ask him to let you move in with him.

(3) Do whatever you need to do to make him want to keep you and feed you.

It would be happening here if the EBT’s cards weren’t flowing from ‘Bama’s stash like coke at a Hollywood party.

Think that ought’a work for boys, too?

Never claimed it would.

It's generally applicable, though:

(1) Find somebody who has money, food and/or shelter.

(2) Find out something that you can do that would please that person enough that he provides you with some.

(3) Do what's needed.

(4) On the side, you may look for somebody who will provide you with better, at less effort from you.

I think the problem is the men are looking through trash themselves...

I hope there are still some private charities in Spain.

This crisis will impart a generational lesson. The last generational lesson was given in the late 30s to mid 40s.
