FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT

Showing support and boosting the morale
of our military and our allied military
and the family members of the above.
Honoring those who have served before.

MUSIC NIGHT
To get you all in the mood
for the Saturday music thread
Fabulous FRiday presents

THE TEMPTATIONS

The Temptations are an American vocal group
known for their success in the 60s
and 70s at Motown Records.
The group's repertoire has included,
during its five-decade career,
R&B, doo-wop, funk, disco, soul,
and adult contemporary music.

Formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1960 as The Elgins
(not to be confused with another Motown group with the same name),
the Temptations have always featured at least five male vocalists/dancers.

The original lineup
included members of two local Detroit vocal groups:
from The Distants, second tenor Otis Williams,
first tenor Elbridge "Al" Bryant,
and bass Melvin Franklin;
and from The Primes, first tenor/falsetto Eddie Kendricks
and second tenor/baritone Paul Williams (no relation to Otis).

Among the most notable future Temptations
were lead singers David Ruffin and Dennis Edwards
(both later solo artists),
Ali-Ollie Woodson, Ron Tyson, Glenn Leonard,
Damon Harris, Richard Street, Theo Peoples,
and G. C. Cameron.

Ain't Too Proud To Beg

Beginnings

Childhood friends Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams,
Kell Osborne, and Wiley Waller formed a doo-wop group
called the Cavaliers in their hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, in 1955.

Future Group manager Milton Jenkins
even created a sister group for the Primes
called the Primettes, who later became
the legendary Supremes,
recruiting Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson,
Diane (later Diana) Ross, and Betty McGlown
for the spin-off act.

Success

The Temptations were the first Motown act
to earn a Grammy Award.
Six Temptations (Dennis Edwards, Melvin Franklin,
Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin,
Otis Williams, and Paul Williams) were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.
Three classic Temptations songs,
"My Girl", "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)",
and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone",
are among The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs
that Shaped Rock and Roll. Contents

The lives and careers of The Temptations
were one of several inspirations for The Five Heartbeats,
a 1991 film about a 1960s Motown-esque male group
starring Robert Townsend, Michael Wright, Leon,
and Harry J. Lennix.

In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine
ranked The Temptations #67
on their list of the
100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

A New Sound

The addition of Dennis Edwards to the Temptations
coincided with the adoption of a new sound
for the group by producer Norman Whitfield,
and in the fall of 1968, Whitfield began producing
psychedelic-based material for the Temptations,
derived primarily from the sound of funk band
Sly & the Family Stone..

Freep mail me to be on or off the Daily Bread ping list

Day Unknown

September 28, 2012

To many Londoners, 1666 looked like the year when Jesus would return. Prophecy enthusiasts had added 1,000 years since Christ’s birth to 666, the number of Antichrist, to arrive at the date 1666.

The world did seem to be on the verge of destruction when in 1665 a plague claimed the lives of 100,000 people in London. Then in September 1666, a London fire destroyed tens of thousands of buildings. Some wondered, Didn’t the Bible predict catastrophes at the end of the world? (see Matt. 24:1-8). Yet the year 1666 passed, and life went on seemingly as it had before.

Even in our own day, there are those who have predicted the end of the world. A date is predicted, the media covers the frenzy, and then that day passes uneventfully.

In God’s wisdom, the actual time of Christ’s return has been kept from us. Jesus said, “Of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only” (Matt. 24:36). This any-moment aspect of Jesus’ return helps keep believers motivated in Christian service and spiritual growth all the time—not just near a certain date (25:1-13; 1 John 3:2-3). Be assured, Christ’s personal return will take place. And as we await that day, our lives should be marked by “holy conduct and godliness” (2 Peter 3:11).

Should He come in the dawn of morning,
At noon or at twilight dim,
I only pray that every day
I’ll be waiting and watching for Him. —Bearden
No doctrine is more closely linked to practical daily living than that of the Lord’s return.

Read: Matthew 24:1-8

Of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. —Matthew 24:36
Bible in a Year:
Amos 1-3

The fibula looks good on X-ray - bearing moderate weight with no difficulty. The cast should come off next visit - 11Oct. Not too soon for me!

BAND OF BROTHERS

WORLD WAR II

Members of the 101st Airborne, June 7, 1944 at Ste.Marie du Mont, France

"This day is call'd the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say, "To-morrow is Saint Crispian."
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say, "These wounds I had on Crispin's day."

KOREA

Members of the "Chosin Few", 1st Marine Division, December 1950

"Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words,
Harry the King, Bedford, and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester,
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered."

VIETNAM

FMF Corpsman D. R. Howe treats the wounds of Pfc. D. A. Crum, "H" Company, 2nd Battalion, Fifth Marine Regiment, during Operation Hue City.

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day."

AFGHANISTAN

Soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division in action, Afghanistan, 2011

"Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more,
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility;
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let it pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as does a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean."

(Henry V, Act IV, Scene iii)

THE STRUGGLE AGAINST TYRANNY GOES ON,
AS IT HAS FROM TIMES IMMEMORIAL.
THE BAND OF BROTHERS STILL STANDS FAST IN THE BREACH!

They have our six!

Honor them for their Service and Sacrifice!

I’ll bet you are tired of it.

I’m off for home with a stop for my folks dinner. They started a Thursday night thing where my Dad brought home McDonald’s, Arbys, etc on Thursdays. They’ve never really done much eating out, so this was fun for them. It stopped when he couldn’t drive anymore. Several weeks ago my Mom came to me and said they would like to do it again, so my job on Thursday is to bring their dinner. I already need to stop at Lowes, and DQ is next door. So they get DQ tonight.

GOD BLESS AND PROTECT OUR TROOPS!

Sir Winston S. Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, PC, DL, FRS, Hon. RA (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965)

"Having received His Majesty's commission, I have formed an administration of men and women of every party and of almost every point of view. We have differed and quarreled in the past; but now one bond unites us all - to wage war until victory is won, and never to surrender ourselves to servitude and shame, whatever the cost and agony may be. This is one of the most awe-striking periods in the long history of France and Britain. It is also beyond doubt the most sublime. Side by side, unaided except by their kith and kin in the great Dominions and by the wide Empires which rest beneath their shield, the British and French peoples have advanced to rescue not only Europe, but mankind from the foulest and most soul-destroying tyranny which has ever darkened and stained the pages of history. Behind them - behind us - behind the armies and fleets of Britain and France - gather a group of shattered States and bludgeoned races: the Czechs, the Poles, the Norwegians, the Danes, the Dutch, the Belgians - upon all of whom the long night of barbarism will descend, unbroken even by a star of hope, unless we conquer, as conquer we must; as conquer we shall.

Today is Trinity Sunday. Centuries ago words were written to be a call and a spur to the faithful servants of Truth and Justice: 'Arm yourselves, and be ye men of valour, and be in readiness for the conflict; for it is better for us to perish in battle than to look upon the outrage of our nation and our altar. As the Will of God is in Heaven, even so let it be.'"

Radio Broadcast – 13May1940

Would that we had such a leader. *sigh* He prefers that our great America be more into servitude and shame.

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond to your last - I was composing a lengthy email to my eldest son and to one of my FMF Doc Brothers.

I'm not pushing it. If I had insisted, the cast would have come off today, but I am not going to put the ultimate healing of this thing in danger. Discretion, as they say, is the better part of Valor.

Churchill had it all exactly right, IMHO. He had early success, then a fall after the Gallipoli disaster. He was effectively in exile for much of the 1930's.

When the time came, the British people brought him back and laid their Fate in his hands, and in the Hands of our Lord Almighty. The portions of his speeches that I post are among the greatest expressions of the ethos, values and benefits of Western Civilization that have ever been uttered.

He was the genuine article. Would that we could have him now! His eloquence calls to mind that of another great orator - Patrick Henry. They articulated the basis of of our dearly held principles of individual freedom, personal responsibility, and reliance on Providence. They affirmed in grand style the aspirations of our civilization. They stated with clarity the dangers posed by our enemies.

Now we have "eye candy."

Must retire – the 0500 Reveille approaches relentlessly.

The Bugler, his grim visage replete with an evil sneer, already mounts the parapet.

Do poor Tom some charity, whom the foul fiend vexes!
