Montana’s Tester says he’s not Obama’s ‘twin’ in tight Senate race
The Washington TImes ^ | 10/10/12 | Valerie Richardson

President Obama hasn’t visited Montana in years, but he’s casting a long shadow over Democratic Sen. Jon Tester’s re-election chances.

In a race marked by jostling over which candidate is the most politically independent, the freshman Democrat has been slammed by accusations that he’s too willing to dance to Mr. Obama’s tune. His opponent, Republican Rep. Denny Rehberg, has all but printed up T-shirts stating that Mr. Tester votes with the president 95 percent of the time.

“One of the big themes of this race is, Who’s the real Montanan? Who’s more independent? Who’s willing to buck his party?” said Robert Saldin, a political scientist at the University of Montana. “That’s what this is all about: Is Jon Tester a real Montanan, or is he doing the White House’s bidding?”

Being linked to the president might not be a big drawback in some states, but it could be the kiss of death in Montana. Voters in Montana didn’t show much love for Mr. Obama in 2008, and they like him even less now: A Real Clear Politics average of the latest poll numbers shows Republican nominee Mitt Romney leading the race by 10.3 percentage points in the state.

Tester is a Democrat. He campaigns as a conservative and votes like a liberal. It’s time for John to go home to Montana and see if he can grow some brains on the old family farm.

Its hard to say who is ahead. The absentee ballots started arriving today. Rehberg has good support among the older folks who leave for the winter, the weather has been good up here so I suspect more of them will have time to get thier votes mailed before it snows.

Montanans tend to like to have their Senators in the party who is in the majority so if they think the Dims will maintain control it will be Tester if they think the Gop will get control then Rehberg. I would not bet either way on the outcome but I think the absentee's and how they think the overall Senate race for control shapes up in the next few weeks will be the key...

Not a twin, just a philosophical doppelganger.

With Tester having a 15% ACU rating, I think that there is a pretty darned good case of saying that he is a rubber stamp for Harry Reid and -bama.

With Romney ahead 53/41 (he'll finish 60/40) and Rehberg up 10 in RCP we can count this Senate seat just about in the bag. It is not conceivable that people will vote for Romney and against Rehberg.

I would suspect that the majority of MT people do not know anything about Tester’s voting record.

Not necessarily, MT has been heavily Democrat for the Senate since World War II, and usually for governor as well.

I suspect that most MT people do not even know which party controls the U.S. Senate in numbers. I don’t think having a senator in the majority rings a bell with people, but I guess it could with some of the trendy independents.

I suspect most people outside of the state don't have a clue about Montana voters.
