Hurricane Sandy's darker side: Looting and other crime
CSM via Yahoo News ^ | 11/3/12 | By Amy Lieberman

Mr. Cooper and a few friends stood talking on his house's porch. It was about 7:45 p.m. and they were the only people around. The ocean breeze was getting colder and stronger. He held his flashlight and looked out onto the street, which was still covered with sand. “There's no lights, there's no cameras, there's no alarms, there's no nothing. It's kind of scary, you know?” he said. His neighbor, Talentin Gutierez showed a reporter a borrowed generator, worth about $2,000. His was robbed the other day. Tonight, he will sleep in his car – wrecked from water damage – to guard the generator.

THAT is the best quote I’ve ever seen. I think my husband needs it emblazoned across his forehead. He is still searching for a home for us that is at least partially underground, has an artesian well, a turret, and enough space for all his weapons. Marrying him 22 years ago was the best decision I ever made :)

“THAT is the best quote I’ve ever seen.”

Precisely why I put firearms & ammo at #1 on my prep list, with water and food being #2 & #3.

This storm has definitely challenged my prepping. Food ok. Gas ok. Wood for heat. Left myself short on one med, but nothing life threatening. Left myself short on d cells, not pleased about that but has been remedied.

Next storm coming Wednesday. Another challenge.

Learning about prepping let me predict what would happen next and adjust.

While others were grabbing batteries before the storm hit, I was filling every cooler with ice and wifey was converting anything she
could to soups and stews.

Thank you fellow freepers.

I’ve said that for years! It applies to everything from Gold to Groceries.

It's interesting that we've seen hundreds of stories about looting, but all the stories seem to come from two locales: Union Beach NJ and the Coney Island/Belle Harbor/Far Rockaway strip.

These two places have one thing in common - they are located right next to low-income housing projects.

Hundreds of cities and neighborhoods, and these two seem to get all the attention.

"...a home for us that is at least partially underground, "

A fair idea for OK.

But didn’t Bloomie say that cell phones were better than having guns in your home. A cell phone by your bedside was way better than a gun because a cop would only be minutes away provided they’re not busy elsewhere.

Where are all of those occupy people? Shouldn’t they be pitching in and helping the people on the east coast?

"Left myself short on d cells"

There are NiMH ones now that can be recharged from your car, generator, solar panel / battery / inverter , etc.

I long for the time when a disaster was an opportunity to help your neighbors instead of being a chance to steal from them.

And NY and NJ are low density areas of gun ownership by law abiders. I wonder how that impacts the situation.

If you’re not prepared to protect it, you shouldn’t have it in the first place. You will be easy prey if you’re not fully prepared for nation-wide shtf like in the northeast right now. You might have a ton of food, but two tons of neighbors wanting to take it

"A solar recharger"

Given that there a a shake out in the solar panel mfg. buziness, I'm still looking for a local source for a few >200W panels, cheap.

Only minutes away when seconds matter
