Glenn Beck Defends Gay Marriage: Republicans Need To 'Expand Our Own Horizon'
Business Insider ^ | 12/11/2012 | Grace Wyler

Posted on 12/11/2012 9:48:27 AM PST by SeekAndFind

Conservative firebrand Glenn Beck has joined a growing chorus of Republican commentators in defending gay marriage, laying out a strong case for ending government opposition to letting same-sex couples wed.

"Let me take the pro-gay marriage people and the religious people — I believe that there is a connecting dot there that nobody is looking at, and that's the Constitution," Beck said during a recent segment of his online talk show. "The question is not whether gay people should be married or not. The question is why is the government involved in our marriage?"

While Beck's defense of gay marriage may seem surprising, given his far-right political views and audience, it is actually not new. Earlier this year, Beck said that he has the "same opinion on gay marriage as President Barack Obama" and does not see same-sex unions as a "threat to America."

Still, Beck's public renewal of his support for gay marriage comes at a politically significant moment for the GOP, which is working to reshape its message to appeal to a changing electorate. A Gallup survey released last week found that 53 percent of Americans are in favor of legalizing gay marriage, a number that has been steadily growing for the past decade.

Moreover, by couching his support for gay marriage in a libertarian framework, Beck makes the case for the right to look past differences on social issues in order to broaden their coalition to include all limited government conservatives.

"What we need to do, I think, as people who believe in the Constitution, is to start looking for allies who believe in the Constitution and expand our own horizon," Beck said. "We would have the ultimate big tent."

Gee, your obsessiveness is causing all kinds of weird behavior on your part, my tag line is all of about 5 or 10 days old and is my first one ever with the word “gay” in it, as far as I can remember, it is about your man Romney, and “gay marriage” the thing that you have been raging about on this thread.

Your raging about being opposed to homosexual marriage as “obsessive” and that it indicates latent homosexuality got a stiff reminder from the boss and your post removed.

I disagree with Beck, you don’t.

Not obsessed? Check your tag line.

Yep, the tag line that you obsessed over, is only 4 or 5 days old, December 6th it was "(The only Senate seat GOP pick up was the Palin endorsed Deb Fischer's successful run in Nebraska)".

This homosexual thing really has you out of sorts.

And good luck with your dissemination of pornography, legalization of crack cocaine and the campaigns for the proliferation of sodomy.

Wow. Gary Johnson vetoed roughly 750 steaming piles of legislation in 8 years, more than all other governors combined. Perhaps you should look into the LP, unless smaller, less intrusive government is not your style.

I did not mention sexual issues or drugs - but feel free to put words in my mouth. Obama may offer you a job if'n y'all get good enough at stuffin words in mouths!

Again you miss the point entirely.

Here is the point.

We shouldn’t want the government involved in any of this, not traditional marriage, not any kind of marriage.

That is the point, when you look to the government for an answer or a solution then you “might” get some short-term relief (of course it will be a compromise to start with because that is politics - no one is happy) but ultimately it always back-fires as we push for the government to make a stand on traditional marriage and we think we have won and then down the road - the very thing we did to get a stand on traditional marriage is used against us to destroy it.

They literally do this every single time.

The ONLY answer to save this Republic is to get government OUT of our private lives. That means everything. Get out of our health-care, get out of my God given rights, etc...

But to have freedom and liberty means we need to tolerate things we don’t like or care for or even don’t believe. That is where God comes in, those people that choose the wrong path will have their reckoning and we really need to leave it to God because it will NEVER work for us having the government shoving this crap down our throats.

You want to see where ALL of this is going, take some time and research the UN Agenda 21 and then go to your local town meetings, planning and zoning and you will see Agenda 21 being implemented right NOW in your neighborhood.

Fiscally Gary was very good, but on social issues he’s a trainwreck to a lot of folks.

That said we could do worse (and have).

Being a New Mexican, I’ve met the guy, and my wife used to train with him and his buds back in her triathlon days, plus work with his Dad. So I have a bit of cred about this.

Germany either recently passed a low prohibiting sex with animals, or is discussing such a law. The “zoophiles” as they call themselves, are protesting. Some leader of the bestiality brigrade says they have a right to have sex with animals and it is wrong to enact laws to stop them.

It’s here...

Libertarians such as yourself live in a pie in the sky fantasy world that has never happened and never will. You mix fedgov forced health care in with “getting gov out of our private lives”.

Murders are often committed in private, incest and rape often happen in private bedrooms, torture of animals occurs often to the animals people own, and on their own property. People, on their own property, often burn toxic garbage that belongs to them, rather than pay to take it to the dump. These actions are all “private lives” issues.

Libertarians pretend that the government - whether fed, state, county, municipal, or whatever - can remain entirely “values neutral”. This is as much an impossibility as a human being remaining “values neutral”. There is no such thing as values neutral any more than there can be a time of day which is not day and not night and not becoming one or the other.

There is good, there is evil. There is right, there is wrong. No government, of any size or shape, or any human being, who can stay in the play pretend land in between good and evil. It is a philosophical mental masturbation game that can exist only in fantasies in peoples’ minds; it is another ridiculous utopian “ideal” that joins the ranks of all the other utopian philosophies; each and every one of which has failed, since the beginning of time.

Critical thinker you ain’t.

Under your big umbrella there is ONE mind - debauchery. You gave up your chance to 'think'. Point proven.

Surfer, it appears you did not address the most basic reason for government.

It is DEFENSE.

If the nation is vulnerable militarily, then the point of government is to defend it. An opposing army is too big for one individual to take on himself. For that reason, we band together to fight enemies.

Disease has long been recognized as a government-level battle, and is similar in every way to the fight against military invasion and conquest.

Disease -- biological, social, and spiritual -- are all repugnant, but we forget sometimes the rational bases of some of our social and spiritual prohibitions. They have been rejected in the past because they are danger.

Homosexuality should be fought everywhere.

we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, ...., we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old. -- Winston Churchill, June 1940

Beck also calls himself a Christian while being a Mormon. He’s not exactly got it all upstairs. While he claims government shouldn’t be in marriage he won’t also then say the people have the right to shun homosexuals as sexual deviants.

And attacked Sarah Palin.

Beck wanted to suck in conservatives so they would bend to his way of thinking when the time was right. Like most RINO’s, that’s the way they start out and then there’s the liberal infiltrating the GOP and doing the same thing with ‘talk only’ but nothing to back it up other than ‘I changed’. All BS’ers, all liars and deceivers!

the solution is simple. Any deviant that comes out is shunned.

That is presently the situation with most normal people who embrace the live and let live position.
Militant or overt gays have never been and will never be in my close circle of friends, or even acquaintances. That is not to say I don't interact with gays.
Militant anti-gay behavior is no different in my daily existence as militant gays are. I don't support either extreme.

Exactly. Redefinition of marriage to be “same-sex”, polygamous and/or incestuous will require an enlargement of the government, not a reduction of it. That’s why the socialists want it and the libertarians are betraying their supposed “government, leave me alone” principles by supporting it.

That’s the ultimate communist/socialist goal: abolish the natural family and replace it with the state.
