Bypassing Congress, the Obama administration has issued a proposed administrative rule, which if adopted, would mandate the installation of “black boxes” in all automobiles and light trucks beginning in 2014.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed the regulation on Dec. 7, which it said “would capture valuable safety-related data in the seconds before and during a motor vehicle crash.”

The proposed standard would require automakers to install event data recorders (EDRs)—so-called “black box devices”—to collect specific safety-related data in all light passenger vehicles beginning Sept. 1, 2014. …

What’s to stop them from also tapping into the black box remotely using a service like on-star, or Hyundai blue link? For example my new Sonata has a microphone above the driver’s seat for when I have my cell phone connected through the blue tooth hands-free system. They could theoretically listen in on conversations happening in the car and record them on command. Even though I never renewed by subscription to Blue-Link it wouldn’t stop the government from being able to connect to my car since it’s still activated.

Exactly why it’s illegal to discuss classified info in a rental car.

Yet another scratch of the 1,000 cuts of regulations that make the cost of goods and services ie, the cost of living itself increase.

He is trying to stimulate work for GM union workers before 2015.

Buy your next car before then or big brother will be in the backseat taking notes.

BTW : are there any limits to his power to in-effect-pass laws by signature?

This was posted several days ago. Many new cars already have this black box, and some have had then for more than 10 years.

If your car has air bags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic fuel injection, odds are you also have one of these boxes, you already have all the sensors.

This not news. It is old news. We are being tracked by credit cards, ez passes, phone towers and various other ways.

The Patriot Act established this as the standard going forward.

So does that mean if you use cash, don’t have a cell phone, and drive a ‘63 Plymouth that they don’t know you exist?
