NRA promises "meaningful contributions" to avert another Newtown
CBS ^ | 12/18/2012 | Brian Montopoli

In its first comment following the horrific shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, the National Rifle Association today said it is "prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again."

The NRA went silent in the wake of the tragedy last Friday: The gun-rights group's Facebook page disappeared, it stopped sending out tweets, and it told reporters that "[u]ntil the facts are thoroughly known, NRA will not have any comment."

On Tuesday, the group said it would hold a "major news conference" on Friday, December 21 in the Washington D.C., area to further explain its position. It did not offer additional details on the press conference.

The National Journal is also blasting away at the NRA - simply because they won't comment until the facts are known.

NRA’s Social Media Strategy: Go Dark
National Journal ^ | Tuesday, December 18, 2012 | Elahe Izadi

Posted on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 6:07:06 PM by Jyotishi

When a mass shooting occurs, the National Rifle Association’s communications shop typically goes dark, particularly its highly visible social media channels. That has certainly been the case post-Newtown. The organization’s Facebook page, with its more than 1.7 million likes, has been hidden with users being redirected to Facebook’s homepage. Its Twitter account, with more than 65,000 followers, has been silent since Friday as well.

As a behemoth powerhouse in politics, the NRA is also highly active on social media channels. To put it into perspective, Republican communications consultant Michael Turk points out that the NRA’s page surpasses the RNC’s Facebook page, which has 1.1 million likes. The gun group’s Facebook presence also certainly eclipses the anti-gun lobby Brady Campaign, which has 42,000 likes.

NRA Releases Statement, Shows More Class than Media

Waiting () was both the humane thing for the NRA to do and the smart thing tactically. By waiting until today, the NRA now knows what the media's tactics are; and by waiting a few days after making this announcement to hold the actual presser, they will have an idea of how our unbiased, objective, open-minded, impartial, non-ideological media intends to absolutely crush and destroy them. What the NRA now has is the time needed to formulate arguments and to put forward that which our craven, opportunistic media has not -- a serious, pro-active plan to ensure Sandy Hook can’t...

I hope that they say:

1. “Assault weapons” were not used.
2. “huge clips” were certainly not a factor - he had all the time he needed to reload.
3. “laws to keep from mentally ill” would not have helped here.
4. “more checks needed” to purchase would have had no effect.
5. “training requirements” would have been useless.

All in all, I want to see them produce a very well supported white paper stating that we need to end “gun free zones” - that virtually all “mass killings” occur in those stupid spots. That if teachers and school workers were encouraged to carry, that is the best shot. Also, that they support posting guards, as is true in Israel.

Israelis are baffled that we don’t.

I agree with Huckabee and Kudlow that the true solution also involves turning back to God and somehow curbing violent video games, and mental health care discussions, but those ought to be outside the realm of the white paper of the NRA.

Baseball Bat would have been more reliable weapon to kill first graders.

Make more people into sitting ducks so more mass murders can be done.

The democrats are already using their little dead bodies to drum up campaign contributions.

Pathetic!!!!

Banning the most popular sporting rifle (and tyranny repellant) platform in the nation is not negotiable...

There's no way to prevent him from stealing it from his mom.

He KILLED his mom to get access to her guns.

He could have killed her without a gun, and taken his jolly good time to break into any safe. Most would succumb to a day or so of serious effort. He would have had the time.

What if (all of) the guns had been locked in a gun safe? One that he did not have access/combination to?

Perhaps after a day or two someone would’ve noticed the mom missing.

The guy was a violent nut job. If he hadn’t been able to get guns, he could’ve built a bomb. A bad guy is gonna do bad things if he really wants to; he’ll find a way.

The NRA had an excellent ad when Pat Purdy shot up the Stockton school yard. Unfortunately logic was overcome by an MSM inspired panic.

As long as there are gun free zones ("Over here! We're unarmed"), there will be more. The target can't fight back..... and they advertise it!

Suggest that every school that’s interested designate a “first responder” who willl have available a firearm in a controlled-access site, and offer free training to that designated individual not only in firearm use, but appropriate response to a Columbine / Sandy Hook incident. And make an offer to financially support local law enforcement in coordinating with that school representative both training and response to such an incident.

In just about every case of these travesties, the perp halted his killing rampage (and often turned the gun on himself) once confronted by an armed challenge. And none of them was deterred by “gun-free zone” signage or hand-wringing over gun control.

Sounds good. I think the PTB will implement something that will cause more school children to be murdered.

More than likely they will offer the AR platform to be banned (most of the older, moneyed donors don’t like them anyway).

A lot of the Fudds got the boot in the last couple of elections. If they do "offer" any further restrictions they will be a group with no members.

My life member card will do a Cheech and Chong immitation and go "up in smoke".
