Sen. Scott Brown says he now supports a federal ban on assault weapons

Although he once said banning so-called assault weapons fell under the category of issues best left to the states, Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown told The Republican / MassLive.com in an exclusive interview Wednesday that he now supports federal action.

Brown cited the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting that killed 26 people, including 20 children, as the turning point in his stance on the issue.

"What happened in Newtown where those children were subject to that level of violence is beyond my comprehension. As a state legislator in Massachusetts I supported an assault weapons ban thinking other states would follow suit. But unfortunately, they have not and innocent people are being killed," Brown said. "As a result, I support a federal assault weapons ban, perhaps like the legislation we have in Massachusetts."

Earlier in the day, Democratic U.S. Senator-elect Elizabeth Warren, who defeated Brown in November's election, reiterated her support of a federal ban as well as increased measures to strengthen the background check process.

I sure hope there’s a Tea Party candidate to challenge him for Kerry’s seat. We do NOT need him back in the senate.

I left his office blank on my ballot last month. Couldn’t be more pleased that I did. He would have been a Jim Jeffords before long. He may be back but I won’t vote for him.

Assault weapons definition: all firearms available to civilians.

I think the crisis that the "progressives" can't afford to overlook -- and the kind that Lincoln talked about in 1854 -- is here. Abe will explain from "the other side."

If you could first know where you are and whither you are tending, you could better judge what to do and how to do it. You initiated a policy to tolerate the Marxist-Alinsky radicals and let them rant; not only has it not ceased but was constantly augmented by decades of infiltration and indoctrination. You now have two Americas. In my opinion, it will not cease until a crisis shall have been reached and passed. A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half statist and half free; I do not expect the house to fall; but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other.

The question today is either the opponents of statism will arrest the further spread of it and place it on course of ultimate extinction, or its advocates will push it forward till it shall become permanent.

Have you no tendency to the latter condition?

Let anyone who doubts carefully contemplate that now almost complete legal combination — piece of machinery, so to speak — compounded of the Republican Party hands-across-the-aisle doctrine and the dreadful actions among statism's chief architects.

529,000 Americans die each year from tobacco related illnesses. When will the ban on tobacco products commence???

195,000 Americans die from medical errors each year. When will the banning of medical practices commence???

107,400 Alcohol Abuse deaths occur each year. When will there be a ban on alcohol??? Oh, wait! Never mind!

There are on average 34,485 motor vehicle deaths in the U.S. each year. When will private ownership of motor vehicles be banned???

31,758 people die each year from accidental poisoning. Where is the outcry??? There are approximately 16,799 non-firearm related homocides each year. When will the government ban homocides???

FBI statistics show that the number one weapon used in violent crimes is a baseball bat. Why is there no outcry for restricting ownership of baseball bats???

I’d feel a lot better if they went after the illegal gun-running operations that bring guns of all kinds including assault weapons into the country. Then I might feel that they are sincere, instead of a bunch of hypocrites who want to take guns from honest, law-abiding citizens.

Maybe I shouldn’t expect too much from people who deliberately put guns in the hands of criminals who used them in crimes. (Fast and Furious, a serious of crimes/felonies committed by the justice department which has refused to acknowledge its crimes)
