These are the accounts of the Second American Civil War, also known as the Wars of Reunification and the American Warring States Period.
After the breakup, many wondered which states would come out in control of the power void created by the dissolution of the United States. There were many with little chance against several of the larger more powerful states. The states in possession of a large population, predisposition for military (i.e.) military bases, and a population open to the idea of warfare fared the best. In the long term, we would look to states with self-sufficiency and long term military capabilities.
Here are the states that held the greatest strategic value from day one. They have the ability to be self-sufficient, economic strength, military strength, the will to fight, and the population to support a powerful war machine.

For all intents and purposes, Alaska and Hawaii ended well enough since they were so far removed from the center of the country that they never really suffer greatly nor benefit from the shattering.

I would think you would see a major war within California and never have to get close to a border.
The encrypted codes shouldn’t be too difficult to,figure out. I saw a show which stated that, until 1976, the code was 0000000.
To paraphrase Rick Blaine, there are certain sections of California that I wouldn't advise you to try to invade.

Alaska. Remote, cold, self sufficient, energy independent, and armed citizens. It would be very difficult to conduct offensive military operations there most of the year. If AK signed a defense pact with Russia or China, a weakling like zero would just let it go. A lot of patriots down here would also move up there to support the cause.

On a state by state level, the fault lines would very likely resemble the old red state - blue state split, but even so, assuming states would hold in the event of such a scenario isn't necessarily realistic.
There are several states today that are pretty thoroughly divided, with a large urban area or two negating the political desires of the vast majority of the respective states in which they're located. Illinois, California, Washington and Pennsylvania are prime examples, with Virginia, North Carolina and Florida close behind, due to net in-migration of leftist voters from northeastern states.
Either there would be intrastate fighting to determine control or the state would split much as Virginia did over secession.
The will to fight and the cultural cohesion would go to red states and counties, but strategically speaking, the blue areas control the coasts and the ports even in the south. World opinion is now socialist opinion, so material support would likely be blue if proffered.
It would be a bloody, messy war with no clear favorite going in. Red would have to take certain blue areas to function economically. Ag commodities, oil and coal would largely lie in the red but it can't all exit through the gulf.
Tough call. Best to avoid it and part ways peacefully if at all possible.
And California would have to get through Arizona to get to Texas. To give you an idea of what that would entail, let me illustrate what Arizona's gun laws are like at this time.
When a traveler enters the State of Arizona, he must stop at the border inspection station. The Arizona border inspectors don't ask whether the traveler is carrying fruit or other agricultural contraband. Rather, the traveler is asked if he is carrying a firearm. If the answer is "no", the inspector assigns him one for himself and each passenger in the car.
I think Florida could beat any state.... What would you do if you saw thousands of 70 year olds, all hopped up on Viagra charging at you....
Remember where they took GWB on 9/11/01? Barksdale AFB in Louisiana. Home of the USAF Global Strike Command (which I believe handles the air-launched nukes). Kinda clashes with the state's "Duck Dynasty" image, but yeah, add Louisiana to the nukes list.

Unfortunately, I don't think that's what's going to happen.
Wyoming, Idaho, Eastern Washington, Eastern Ore, Nev (except Las Vegas)would become a state of their own.
Texas would be left standing tall.I have no doubt about it.
