India..Brilliantly Industrious/Incredibly Barbaric
Dec,30,2012 | Floyd A. Logan

A young girl in India was attacked by a small gang of local youths. This girl was assaulted ,tortured with a metal rod. The rod was used to beat and sodomize her. Perhaps mercifully, the teenage girl died this week while being hospitalized for severe internal injuries plus numerous infections.

Her family and neighbbors are outraged. There is suspicion that the crimes are going to be ignored, with police aiding the cover-up. There were many outbreaks of violence earlier this week. Many conclude that the accusers will probably not be punished with any level of severity if the public does not demand rapid and obvious justice.

I find it sad and startling that this attitude toward women, or toward any other human being is tolerated, presumed and defended in this day and age. I know or have known many people from India, the majority have impressed me as being very intelligent and perceptive.

Don't we Americans already depend on them for phone-in Customer Service? That's just one example. Sure, that accent may be heavy at times, but for the most part, these people do know what their talking about, enough to break it down a explain to an inrate, spoiled american consumer.

So this same culture when not being nagged about Human Rights, when not being tattled on by the Red Cross, reverts back to the caste way of thinking. Different classes of people deserve varying degrees of compassion or legal represenation. I know, some countries will say the same abous us in the US of A. Well, at least our court system is not as blatant in it,s occasional duplicity. This savagery disturbs me, I thought that it was Pakistan that was the inpredictable 'wild child', where they riot fullbore over nothing, where barbarity rules the day and the night. Maybe India is so big, as with China, that its' going to take years, if not decades for all the lands of India to become more modern.

It’s not the government’s job to hand out justice, for that there is a process called Judicial system.

And as per your theory we should have seen a lot more Vigilantism here in US since O J Simpson, the dozens of mass shootings, home invasion, armed robbery, terrorist attacks, Wall Street scam, political corruption and Obama government. Having second amendment didn’t make a difference.

The judicial system in India is fine, it does it job. It’s the government that is slacking. Not that the US government is a major step up in that regard.

I have a different theory. Americans don’t give a sh!t, Indians give too much, and so the rioting.

Apart from a small, emergent, Westernized middle class concentrated around Mumbai and New Delhi, most of India remains a backward, premodern society.

And over time, the Westernized middle class will diffuse into the rest of Indian society. Unlike the US, where the culture of the underclass is increasingly pervading the middle class.

“That’s good to know you weren’t at all worked up through all the rage spew against Indians.”

You think what I said was a “rage spew”? Typical spoiled, arrogant Indian male.

Let me qualify that a little. Americans riot when there is a race issue or when you hit their wallets, like during occupy wall st or WTO. Anything else Americans don’t care so much to be on the street in the cold.

The judicial system is part of the government.

Second, the US is seeing an enormous amount of vigilantism, based on the states and the Supreme Court freeing up our gun rights and liberties. Citizens are standing up against crime and interfering with criminals, even when they could choose not to do so.

And if you argue this is just self-defense, in Britain they would have no argument at all calling it vigilantism. If attacked, the BBC says that a person should not cry “Help!”, because other citizens should not intervene. Instead they should cry “call the police!”

Vigilantism is enshrined in the Castle Doctrine, and the Stand Your Ground laws. And while India is still somewhat caught up in the British vices.

“I live in India and I am a proud firearm owner - but I am the exception not the norm, an odd situation in a country with a proud martial heritage and a long history of firearm innovation. This is not because the people of India are averse to gun ownership, but instead due to Draconian anti-gun legislation going back to colonial times.”

“You think what I said was a “rage spew”?”

Yup, misdirected nonsensical rage spew.

Typical spoiled, arrogant Indian male.”

And proudly so. Besides I can also point to another one on this thread just as arrogant.....plus stupid.

You went all out on a diatribe against Indian call center because someone wrote “spoiled American”...didn’t matter who wrote it.

Maybe the author should have added “spoiled angry defensive Americans”.

The Westernized middle class in India seems certain to prefer to cluster in the few enclaves that offer a middle class, Westernized lifestyle. Lack of education, poor governance, weak infrastructure, ethnic, linguistic, and religious differences, corruption, and limited economic opportunity and social mobility seem likely to prevent most of India from attaining a modern level of development for a long time to come.

I am not sure which one you are referring to as “vigilantism” but you are confusing two completely different things. One angry public rioting against the government and two....public taking on a lone criminal or a deranged lunatic.

As for US seeing enormous cases of.....Citizens standing up against crime and interfering with criminals. I am not sure I actually see any of that but there are plenty of criminal and horrific incidents happening in US quite frequently.

Rape, murder, armed robbery, mass shoot out are not all that unheard of here in US, regardless of vigilantism. If anything there is more violence in US then in India. What is unheard of however is public display of rage and anger against the government over individual criminal incident.

I don’t believed Americans have less reasons to be angry at their government then Indians. Just that most Americans care little until something hits their wallet. Neither is a step up or a step down.

Yup “modern” would be children and adults being massacred in schools and movie theaters, priests raping altar boys on a regular basis, etc.

The Westernized middle class India living in the big cities and towns is actually as big the population of United States. And their number is growing with the economic growth. While the same in US is shrinking. That’s the most important part.

The Westernized Indian middle class is not as affluent as that of the US. Moreover, lack of infrastructure, political dysfunction, a rigid and corrupt bureaucracy, over regulated markets, a poor educational system, and limited social mobility restrict India's prospects for development.

India's middle class is likely to remain but a relatively small segment in a vast country that is mostly poor, rural, and bound to the land. Meanwhile, as the US economy recovers, many of the ills afflicting the US middle class will alleviate -- and especially so if necessary political and economic reforms are implemented.

None of this is meant to disparage India, and I genuinely hope that India advances and prospers more than I expect it to.
