Paul Ryan urges unity, prudence among conservative ranks at National Review conference
Paul Ryan laid out his vision for the Republican Party’s next four years in a morning address to the National Review Institute Summit on the future of conservatism in America.
Ryan argued that Republicans should lay out their plans with even more detail now that they are the entrenched opposition.
Republicans will have to oppose “big government in practice” and not just in theory, he predicted. Obamacare is no longer just a 2,000 page bill, but 12,000 pages of regulations, he said to illustrate his point.
“We will have to convince the country to change course” by contrasting conservative ideas with the president’s policies, he said. “We have to show that, if given the chance, we can govern. We have the ideas.”
“We will win back the trust of the American people,” he said.
He said that the president will try to divide conservatives, especially in the House majority, but he urged conservatives to resist the potential for infighting.
“We have to stay united.”
Ryan also urged Republicans to be prudent in their governance. “Prudence is good judgment in the art of governing,” he said.
“Our founders were men of prudence,” he said. James Madison supported the Constitution despite the fact that several of his ideas were not incorporated into the final document, Ryan said. “We are the living beneficiaries of Madison’s prudence,” Ryan argued.
Looking at Republicans’ opportunity for policy reform, Ryan said that Republicans will have to oppose the growth of the administrative state in Washington, but the states are the “frontlines of reform.”
“I’m not ready to give up, and I know you’re not either,” he said to the crowd, which gave him a standing ovation at the end of his remarks.
Sounds like common sense although its easier said than done.
Hopefully Prudence means no ‘path to citizenship’.
I heard that Ryans 10 year balanced budget plan takes advantage of the current higher (Clinton) tax rates for income over $400K when citing how it could work. And he refers to it as the 'current tax baseline' when explaining it.
Back here in 2010 he was saying that raising those taxes would make the deficit worse by 'killing the economy' :

Platitudes and generalities ain’t gettin’ it.
Without specifics, articles like this are worthless.
Time to get busy. Who has a workable plan with details?
The left will soon force a workable plan. They’ve already started the next civil war.
One plan is to adapt our language. The libs are basically simple minded. By that I mean the sheeples. The government power brokers are smart enough.
We need to talk at about a third grade level. The sheeple libs are like hop`eless teenagers living in a house where housing, electricity, water, food is a given.
We need to start addressing the fact in EASY language that there is a limit to this house, our government’s, abilities. Folks have to work. Folks cannot just take. Governement jobs do not provide a roof over anyone’s heads except themselves. Government workers only take.
We need to develop resources which currently exist. We need to put folks to work who can work. We cannot all live under some big government house. It cannot sustain itself.
I know this sounds juvenile. We have to address juveniles. Not just the actual ones, but those whose minds have not developed beyond that stage, either from groupthink or from a different heritage which does not understand.
We are dealing with a nation which is barely above the think level of babies.
Unity?
Let's put make this a sports metaphor. The QB on one team calls a huddle, and he says, "let's come together". And then we walks over to the defensive huddle, and says, "hey, let's come together and work for the same thing."
Ryan ain't no frickin' leader. He can't identify the enemy and effectively communicate that he is right and they are wrong and only one team needs to win.
I am not writing about a Republican team, but an American team with conservative values, as most Republicans have never had any values or principles and zero Democrats have either.
Looking back on it, I don’t think Ryan did well in his exchange with Biden though at the time I thought he was the marginal “winner”. Ryan is too much of a Boy Scout for politics, but he is likeable.
I may be wrong, but wasn’t Ryan just shilling for Rubio’s amnesty plan?
that VP debate was really one of the more underrated moments of the campaign. Romney had all the momentum after the 1st debate and the dems were starting to panic. Ryan could have delivered a knockout blow. If he’d done the same thing Romney did in the first debate there’s a good chance Mitt’d be President right now.
Instead it was a draw at best and it stanched the bleeding and allowed Obama and the dems to regroup. You could even say Ryan choked. IMHO, Biden smoked him. Wasn’t even really that close.
But strangely, you never really heard anything about it. Especially in conservative media. It’s like the whole debate never happened.
I’d suggest to you that if the exact same situation had happened with a certain someone else that person would have immediately been blamed for the failure of the entire campaign and would have become the scapegoat for the whole thing.
Ryan, otoh, was totally absolved and got off scot-free
So prudence was what caused some of them to vote for the $60 Billion pork bill for Sandy?
Most of the Republicans that want ten years to balance the budget won’t be around in ten years so what do they care? The budget should be in balance by the next election or they should resign.
By the time Boner and Rubio get through making all the illegals citizens and adding them to the food stamp and Medicaid roles, it won’t make any difference anyway because there won’t be anything left to balance.

Do you think it was okay to give $60 Billion dollars to the Sandy fund - much of it pork - with no corresponding expense cuts or the fact that it’s okay to take ten years to balance the budget - which won’t happen even then - or that it’s okay to allow all the perhaps 50 million people who are here illegally to become citizens?
I totally agree. Enough advice from the podium. Ryan needs to starts raising his voice as do all the others, and start fighting back with a vengeance.
This is all just hooie. The pubbies will never get power back with “leaders” like boehner and mc connel.
Forget Ryan. He is a Socialist pushing Illegal Alien Amnesty...which will cost taxpayers more to implement than ObamaCare.

Why not fix the current problems before inviting in a ton of new ones? The entitlement boom of amnesty will crush us....politically and financially.
Make no mistake, Rubio’s loyalty is to illegals and La Raza...not US citizens.
Zero and the Dems are well established in opposition to US citizens...everyone already knows that. Rubio and his CINO buddies just decided to join them.
