Since people started living in communities, theres been tension between the rulers and the ruled.
That became particularly acute when America reintroduced the concept of self-government 237 years ago.
Bob Buckley reports on Eustace Conway, a Boone man who says he just wants to be free from the government and its rules.

Hey Laz, here is a good link to the story and video.

Fecal matter, on the other hand, is a big problem. Sanitary disposal is essential.
In fact, it is the safe disposal of human fecal matter than enabled people to live together in large cities.
The contamination of water supplies was the cause of horrible epidemics in the past.
Such public health measures as sanitary water supplies is a top priority in solving serious health problems in undeveloped countries. Its importance, here and elsewhere, cannot be overemphasized.
I once lived in a beautiful and expensive neighborhood on a large and beautiful river. My septic tank stopped working. The plumber who came to fix it told me that in the past the houses on the river emptied their household waste directly into the river and that the pipes for doing so were still intact. He advised me to reconnect my house to them and simply empty the waste into the river. Not only did I refuse to do this, but I fired him for even suggesting such a thing. I put in a new spetic tank that conformed to all public health standards and regulations.
About twenty years ago, I rented a farmhouse from an old gent in a nursing home. I painted, restored a lot of wood put windows in. He never charged me a cent. One day I looked at the pathetic trickle of water coming down a “stream” on the side of the property. I spent a lot of time taking the trash out of it, cutting the brush clogging it, and digging up the sediment that formed from the obstructions. I put Brook Trout in it and used to sit for hours watching them, fishing for them and releasing them. One day the fish commission showed up and said I was obstructing the “natural progression of the demise of a waterway” or some such crap.
The site works for everyone else.
My suspicion is that they’re trying to shut this guy down after 26 years because some friend of someone on the county Board of Supervisors wants the land for development. There’s no other earthly reason to start hassling the man now.
I think C.S. Lewis wrote something about how the most awful tyrannies are perpetuated by self-righteous busybodies who make us do things for our own good, because they think they know what’s best for all of us, and their good intention absolve their consciences.
“Wake up! Silliness is clouding your judgment.”
You wake up. This is one guy way up in the mountains, not a cast of thousands. And his whole gig is teaching primitive living, skills that survivalists will admire. I think you are like the petty bureaucrats that are after him, and sound more like you belong on DU or some other liberal big gov’t site.
The site was created by tumor-laden dead monkeys on crack who failed polygraph tests. I have seen better websites written by Walking Dead zombies in fuzzy slippers. The security is impeccable: No one can get into the website at all. The amount of effort that went into this website equals the strain I push when stricken with diarreah, and the website loads with similar elegance and glory. The site is best nuked from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.
“Having no septic system endangers other people”
A septic tank is an outhouse designed to deal with the huge amounts of water generated by flush toilets. It deals with human pathogens in one way, then dumps the effluent into the soil.
Traditional “outhouses” (pit latrines), deal with human pathogens without contaminating hundreds of gallons of water.
Composting latrines treat human pathogens in an aerobic system.
If designed and used properly all three are equally benign to the environment.

Makes me wonder how we survived the early years with only an outhouse and well water.
Use it, spread some lime or wood ashes. What could be wrong with that!
To be honest, I have seen some outhouses placed in the WRONG place and did contaminate creek water.
Darling Laz, this sort of post is why I and everyone else here love you! You are so funny. xoxo
People can live as primatively as the wish, but they must dispose of their fecal material in a sanitary manner.
Right!
If you are a chick, let’s get married.

I used to be a chick, but now I’m middle-aged. Sorry. Time and tide wait for no man (or woman).

I’m a member of the Unake Rod & Gun Club. Have a had an occasional Watauga member visit out facilities awhile back. Where is the Watauga Club located?
Just outside Boone. Contact Wayne Green or Rick Oakes. I used to shoot IPSC with them years ago. I see they are still there.
