Vegetarian Bill Gates: 'Livestock produces 51% of world's greenhouse gases'
The Examiner ^ | Mar. 21, 2013 | Samantha Chang

Billionaire Bill Gates is a vegetarian who has become a vocal advocate for a plant-based diet. Gates says a vegetarian diet is healthier and more environmentally friendly than a meat-based diet, and notes that the production of meat is responsible for over half the greenhouse gas emissions in the world.

"[Moving toward a vegetarian diet is] important too in light of the environmental impacts of large-scale meat and dairy production, with livestock estimated to produce nearly 51% of the world’s greenhouse gases," Gates blogged on Mashable March 21.

"The global population is on track to reach nine billion by 2050. What are all those people going to eat? With billions of people adding more animal protein to their diets — meat consumption is expected to double by 2050 — it seems clear that arable land for raising livestock won’t be able to keep up."

Gates, the co-founder and chairman of Microsoft and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, regularly blogs about the future of food on his website, Gates Notes.

Bill says there are great innovations taking place in food production that can create delicious plant-based meat substitutes that mimic the taste and texture of meat.

Gates, 57, says the innovations can also help with hunger-relief efforts in poor countries. In 2012, the Gates Foundation announced plans to invest in genetically-modified agriculture to combat world hunger.

While the move has been criticized by some, Gates insists a plant-based diet is the cornerstone of superior health, hunger relief, and is better for the environment.

Maybe Bill Gates should ask Linda McCartney how is that vegetarian lifestyle helped her.

ooo Thank you for reminding me to take out the Corn Beef. Whenever they are in sale I buy a few and put in freezer.

People should have the right to eat whatever they want to eat just like Michelle stuffing her wide butt. As for me, I don’t know why but I am getting tired of meat but then the craving for meat comes back. So for a few weeks I cook up some non-meat meals then gradually go back to meat. then repeat and rinse =)

How about the days when the eco-freaks said "you cold walk on the back of Buffalo all the way across the Great Plains" that the environmentalists seem to pine for and blame civilization for their demise? Did those Buffalo fart too, or were their farts less bad than a dairy cow? I don't think you could walk across the Midwest today on the backs of cows. ;~))

And while we are at it, kill all those Wildabeast and Cape Buffalo in Africa too since they fart just as much or more than Elsie The Cow ever did.

For some amazing reason which only Bill Gates can comprehend, when cows take carbon in from the existing environment by eating vegetation and put it back out into the existing environment a few hours later, while also making lots of good food for us to eat, they are bad. But if it a Government subsidized ethanol refinery takes that same vegetation and turns it into fuel, it's somehow a good thing.

The vegan thing with Gates is only recent. The media used to play up the fact that he would eat at McDonald’s every day, going back to the 1990s. In 2007, he even bought a stake in McDonald’s.

'Livestock produces 51% of world's greenhouse gases'

Bill, maybe you had better check the formulae in your Excel spreadsheet.

Termites are ahead of domestic livestock as the leading producers of greenhouse gas.

"http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/could-termites-be-the-worlds-terminators-a-humble-forest-insect-may-be-emitting-dangerous-amounts-of-methane-stella-wiseman-reports-1394135.html"

"termites were blamed for at least part of the increase, with estimates ranging from less than 5 per cent to more than 40 per cent of the total annual global methane production."

" The release of methane into the atmosphere by cattle and other large grazing mammals is estimated to account for 12 to 17% of the total global methane release."

SO, Bill Gates dies and goes to the pearly gates. Saint Peter stands there stoically. Bill asks him, “Well, heaven or hell?” Saint Peter reaches below his high podium and pulls out a very large hour-glass, turns it over, sets it down and walks away.

As my elderly father in law lay dieing he said:”Where’s my mother? I can hear her but I can’t see her.” Of course his mother passed on years before he did.

When my mother was in her final days in hospice care, she would look up occasionally and say 'Mommy, I see you." That's all she ever said by that point.

Her mother had died when she was only 8 years old, -- 75 years eariler -- but the look on my mother's face told me she really did see her mother.

I like to think that there was a wonderful reunion that day. They had a lot of catching up to do.

Methane accounts for about the grand total of 0.36% of all greenhouse gases. Gates is a good thief and a good marketing guy. Not so hefty on the intellect evidently.

Why is it that so many people with power, influence, and fortune in this world, are also some of the most mis-informed people imaginable?

Is there a single billionaire with common sense on the planet???

I kinda got a sense of that while searching for images of the guy. I guess he's been a huge supporter of some sort of vaccine(?)

guess he isn’t aware of the major methane problem from rotting vegetation in traditional rice paddy cultivation.
