Gregory Schaffer said after his tour of duty in the Marines he wanted to go home and fly a flag in his yard.

But a complaint from an anonymous neighbor got Schaffer in some hot water.

Schaffer got a citation from the city of Hypoluxo, Florida that said he needed a building permit to put up the flagpole.

The Marine told a TV station “it’s sad. It’s sad that we have to go through that just to fly a flag.”

Schaffer added “It’s disgusting that anybody should have to go through that. I fought for the flag, now I’m paying for the flag,” Because Schaffer rents the house he would have to pay a contractor nearly $1,000 to put in a flagpole.

I would ask the owner of the house for permission to paint the outside as an American Flag. It would probably annoy the neighbor more.

Maybe he was supposed to fly the Obama logo instead?

“florida law has specific statewide laws on this.”

And if challenged in court, the state law that only protects the lying of a US, Florida or Armed Services flag would be overturned.

First Amendment

Sixth Amendment

Fourteenth Amendment

but if you need a permit to put up a flag poll,

It's spelled pole and if you need a permit, there is too much government in your life and neighborhood.

I emailed the Mayor and his councilmen politely shaming them.

Guess we will see if they “fix” this.

not an issue here.

this is an american flag.

the only issue is whether or not the pole is longer than 20 feet.

A permit. To dig a hole and stick a pole in it, you must have a permit.

In Florida with all those hurricanes, you betcha. This is a law that is intended to save your house from getting hit by a flying pole if the job is not done correctly. You most likely need to have a county inspector check it out too before they sign off on it. Yes laws are a pain but it is important in a state like Florida.

Ignoring local regulations

Is what made America great. I despise liberal yankee get-along-to-go-along so-called conservatives.

You are right. After every hurricane I read about all of the people killed by flying flagpoles.

Those thing are dangerous.

Cut me a break here Brother. Any time an American, veteran cannot place a flagpole in his yard and fly the flag of America, that part where he lives is no longer the America I want to live in.

Whoever turned him in is a POS of the highest order.

$1,000 for a flagpole? How large is it? Should not cost that much.

Even in California it is illegal for a homeowners association to ban the American flag.

Horsecrap. Most of the zoning laws are for generating revenue.

I live in tornado alley. NOTHING is going to stop high winds from putting a tree that God grew through my house if that's what happens. Forget flagpoles.

I despise yankee liberal wanna-be conservatives that bend over backwards to support local tyrany.
