Gregory Schaffer said after his tour of duty in the Marines he wanted to go home and fly a flag in his yard.

But a complaint from an anonymous neighbor got Schaffer in some hot water.

Schaffer got a citation from the city of Hypoluxo, Florida that said he needed a building permit to put up the flagpole.

The Marine told a TV station “it’s sad. It’s sad that we have to go through that just to fly a flag.”

Schaffer added “It’s disgusting that anybody should have to go through that. I fought for the flag, now I’m paying for the flag,” Because Schaffer rents the house he would have to pay a contractor nearly $1,000 to put in a flagpole.

There is a time to tell local government to SOD OFF. This is one of them. They aren't anything more than jumped up protection rackets, anyway.

And everyone here on FR defending the 'rules and regulations' are yankees from what I see, mostly from the northeast. You know, that crowd that supported Romney and got us 4 more years of Obama.

You call yourself a conservative and then applaud the government INTRUSION on a town that REQUIRED all of their citizens to have guns. Talk about a wanabe conservative. That is you 100 percent.

Exactly. Complaining about intrusive permit requirements is fair game, but the local authorities aren’t telling him he can’t fly the American flag, they just want to get paid before he can do it. In my city you can’t technically change the cover plate on an electrical outlet without a permit.

Sorry but I don’t agree. This is really not a big deal especially if you live in a Home Owners Association. The Marine moved there. Nobody forced him to live there. I don’t see what the big deal is. Their are the flags that people put in their doorway which are much better anyway. You can see them driving. A flagpole most people won’t even see because it is too high up especially in a neighborhood. Now I see a HUGE American Flag on the highway that a car dealership puts up. Now that is very realistic since tons of cars pass through.

In Florida with all those hurricanes, you betcha. This is a law that is intended to save your house from getting hit by a flying pole if the job is not done correctly.

Do they have laws in Florida that require you to anchor your Prius to prevent it from floating away when Hurricane Beezelbub makes land?

I'm guessing you own a Prius.

this has been litigated in FL.

Associations and municipalities have had to back down.

BTW canadian flags were not protected.

I did not ever applaud government intrusion anywhere, and you defame me by saying that I did.

Governments are tarted up protection rackets, exchanging money for favors, and if you don't play, you get whacked.

Of course. I also have complete solar panels on my roof. I grow my own vegetables and NEVER go to the grocery stores. I only drive when I have 10 stops to make usually about every six months. I make my own toothpaste and other items so I don’t have to purchase things in stores. I use my toilet water and feces to use as fertilizer. Any more wile guesses?????

Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

Why not? I think in some cases it's a rather good excuse.

Of course.

No need to be insecure about owning a Prius. You're saving the planet by owning one. As an added bonus, they cause less damage than a SUV when they get thrown around during a hurricane

I bet he could install an exterior wall mount flag pole, without a permit. He should do that while waiting for his permit.

That would not stand in a federal court as that First Amendment thing would get in the way.

Not just a building permit, but a fine/tax/fee to go along with it.

if you need a permit to put up a flag poll, then you need to get the permit.

Ya, some Italian might put up dozens of Italian flags on poles....A hurricane might blow the pole into Georgia and hit someone..How about mandatory government tree inspections to ensure branches won't break off? Tree permits?

Are they're any other cock'n bull excuses we can come up with to justify this punitive controlling government nonsense?

You are right. After every hurricane I read about all of the people killed by flying flagpoles. Those thing are dangerous.

I once read a flagpole in Floriduh struck dozens in the head killing them all.

BTW, no sharp objects are allowed on top of flagpoles, such as plastic or metal eagles with sharp beaks or wings. In fact, if you want something to adorn the top of your flagpole, that takes a separate building permit.

But the government permit process is not too expensive and is relatively streamlined, and in many cases the paper work consist of only about 27 pages or so after permit fees have been paid.

In many areas of the country, part the government building permit process includes searches to determine if the applicant:

1. Ever violated the permit process previously.

2. Checks to see if all property taxes have been paid.

3. Checks to see if the applicant has any outstanding or unpaid traffic tickets?

4. Checks to determine if your vehicles have current registration.

4. Some jurisdictions also check to see if your pets are licensed as part of the permit process.
