White House officials are now openly conceding that President Obama's gun control package could die on Capitol Hill, a development analysts said would cast a pall over the president's second-term agenda and weaken his leverage with Republicans.
The president's trek to Denver on Wednesday was his latest attempt to regain momentum on the issue of gun violence, on which Obama has so far failed to close a deal despite a substantial investment of political capital.
"There doesn't have to be a conflict between protecting our citizens and protecting our Second Amendment rights," Obama said, surrounded by law enforcement officers in the Colorado capital.
But an overwhelming number of Republicans and a handful of red-state Democrats aren't buying that message.
Unlike immigration, which the White House views as a political winner even if the GOP kills reforms, new gun restrictions don't enjoy the same level of support along party lines. Obama can't merely bank on painting Republicans as obstructionists for political gain, analysts said.
"I don't think Republicans would lose the House [in 2014] simply because they blocked the president's gun initiatives," said Nathan Gonzales, deputy editor of the nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report.
And from a policy perspective, this may represent Obama's last, best shot to achieve the types of firearms laws long rebuffed by the powerful gun lobby in Washington.
"It has to be done this calendar year -- and that's being generous," Gonzales added.

No it doesn’t. If the law is not passed the following things will happen.
A tougher gun control law will be prepared and set aside.
A mental patient will be released from an insane asylum.
He will legally get a gun on the “to be banned” list by passing the NICS and local state checks.
He will get extended magazines on the “to be banned” list.
He will get ammo.
He will go on a killing spree.
He will then kill himself.
The set aside bill to ban guns will be brought out and passed in the heat of passion, with a backup of giving billions to the states as a bait to pass the bill.
It has happened in the past. This is how Pat Purdy got his guns to shoot up the Stockton school yard, then the California AW ban, which was already prepared, was passed in the heat of passion.
Is anybody, even, seriously and successfully, finding out about how much cheating was, actually, going on, during the ‘12 U.S. general election as well as during all other elections, in ‘13 and before ‘13 and to the best of human abilities? There’s, at the very least, the possibility of cheating going on, during ALL ELECTIONS, at every political level, to each and every political office, going back to the very beginning, IMHO. It’s like trying to keep track of each and every moment in existence where somebody-an individual or a group-was, actually, being unconstitutional, from day one of the existence of the U.S. Constitution all the way up to the, actual, end of the world.

Besides, based on the lack of action coming out of the Congress, he's basically already lost.

Fast and Furious (AKA Gunwalker) was pretty close. The ATF officials who designed it were joyful everytime those guns were used in crime in Mexico. At least 500 were killed with those weapons.
You could argue that those deaths would have happened anyway. But it is not much of a step from being complicit in massacres for political purposes to actively designing them.

Absolutely correct - the only thing I would add is that it’s basically already just about a done deal (the totalitarian state) and the people who elected Obama are going to be shocked when they wake up (if they wake up) and realize the destruction he has wreaked - ALREADY, not in the future.
So far as I have seen, the elite, establishment, inner Beltway RINOs are at war with the TEA Party and conservatives. They have made alliance with the Donkeys so they can rule over Americans to preserve their perks. The RINO consultants like Karl “Tokyo” Rove and Steve “hate Palin” Schmidt want to: (1) maximize the money they make from ineffective PACs and (2) make sure their fellow Donkeys stay in the power sharing partnership with them.
If Republicans are to be successful, the Quislings in the Republican Party must be purged and sent to the showers with the Libs and Donkeys.
