If I had to pick one that stands out it would be John Toland’s “The Rising Sun.”

I was planning to bring this up for discussion on Homer's thread prior to the 70th anniversary of Operation Citadel but if you've read it, what is your opinion of The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer?

Beautiful blue sky all day so far, Luv. Hope that means a chance to see the full moon later.

Sunset...9:49pm

Hope your day turned out better than it started...no more headache.

It’s not bad. I am getting random pricks of pain that I wouldn’t think would be part of the shingles, but since I know they are, I can ignore them! The doctor said I was progressing nicely and had a really huge amount of rash. Not quite what I’d want to hear. LOL!

I have read it. There have been questions raised about it’s authenticity. There is apparently no record of a Guy Sajer in the German archives. I don’t know; if not a real story about a real Alsatian in the Waffen SS, I don’t doubt that it was an accurate portrayal of what life was like gor a German soldier during WW2.

Good evening, Mac...*HUGS*...a good commute?

Yes - shades of School! I first read that work in 1965 in my senior year of HS and loved it! I wrote a paper that year on "The Miller's Tale." In my undergrad days, I took several courses in medieval English Lit. One exclusively in Chaucer - with the entire Canterbury Tales. A brilliant poet in my opinion, whose value has endured and stood the test of time, and who is as relevant now as when he was writing.

There is apparently no record of a Guy Sajer in the German archives.

I think that can be explained away due to incomplete records stemming from the sheer volume of men going into a combat unit on the Russian Front and record destruction.

I don’t know; if not a real story about a real Alsatian in the Waffen SS

Those claiming fraud over the location of a cuff title rarely if ever consider that Sajer may have belonged to a completely different unit or was ghostwriting for someone who for a variety of reasons could not identify himself.

Anyway, I'll bring up the topic again on Homer's thread at some opportune time in the next month, or two.

A fair commute in the morning, thanks. This evening, for some reason I have not been able to ascertain, the commute was extremely smooth - made it door-to-door in under 45 minutes. Beautiful Spring day here - high in the mid-60's, bright sun, clear skies. A beautiful full moon this evening.

Actually, I take that back; he wasn’t in the Waffen SS. He was in Grossdeutschland, which was a Wehrmacht unit. Like I said, I know there are questions but not conclusively resolved. “Fake but accurate.”

As for his description of Kursk, I don’t think it was accurate. There was no great “huuman wave” that overwhelmed the Germans. But in the chaos and exhaustion of combat, I can see how that’s what he remembers.
