Carbon dioxide passes symbolic mark (on top of Mauna Loa)

Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have broken through a symbolic mark.

Daily measurements of CO2 at a US government agency lab on Hawaii have topped 400 parts per million for the first time.

The station, which sits on the Mauna Loa volcano, feeds its numbers into a continuous record of the concentration of the gas stretching back to 1958.

The last time CO2 was regularly above 400ppm was three to five million years ago - before modern humans existed.

Scientists say the climate back then was also considerably warmer than it is today.

Carbon dioxide is regarded as the most important of the manmade greenhouse gases blamed for raising the temperature on the planet over recent decades.

Human sources come principally from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.

The usual trend seen at the volcano is for the CO2 concentration to rise in winter months and then to fall back as the northern hemisphere growing season kicks in. Forests and other vegetation pull some of the gas out of the atmosphere.

This means the number can be expected to decline by a few ppm below 400 in the coming weeks. But the long-term trend is upwards.

As global temps remain at sixteen year lows.

That's one of the effects of Global Warming. Others are increased snowfalls, decreased snowfalls, increased hurricane frequency, decreased hurricane frequency, and everything else we have observed in the past two decades.

There have been several periods in history when CO2 ppm’s were over 1000 (way, way over 400 obviously) AND mean temperatures were far COLDER than today. Also some >1000 and WARMER. What this tells us is that CO2 is not a very important greenhouse gas (and that, as its concentration rises, its already small marginal effect on mean temperatures falls).

Other factors are much more important, including variations in sun activity, water vapor, suspended particulates (volcano ash primarily), etc.

You’ve done an excellent job stating my thoughts here. In fact, I believe that the CO2 emissions are being accurately measured. I believe that the rise comes from the burning of fossil fuels. However, what that means is literally up in the air. I’ve lived long enough to see environmental hysterics, starting with the mass death of songbirds from DDT and the extinction of humanity from overpopulation to believe anything coming from the environmentalists.

My own little pet theory is that we’ve gotten very, very good at measuring things, both individually and in groups, but we keep looking for patterns that aren’t there. High CO2 emissions? Must have caused that hurricane! Women as a group earn less than men as a group? Must be the patriarchy! More crime in areas with black people? Must be slavery! I really think our descendants will look at us as slightly (maybe more than slightly) deranged for insisting that every observed change is attached to some reason, no matter how distant or nonsensical.

Global warming is 21st century phrenology. Little bumps in the atmosphere that have profound meaning.

God help us.

those idiot scientists couldn’t measure a teaspoon of water in the ocean. why should we trust anything they say?

It’s funny that the BBC didn’t try to draw any conclusions from the CO2 numbers, like things are getting warmer. Wait, things ARE NOT getting warmer. Haven’t for 16 years. I guess they didn’t want to mention that little factoid in the same article pimping “all time high” CO2 numbers. People might get the wrong impression. As it is, the BBC must simply be hoping people have been so brainwashed and are so unable to actually thing any more that people will mentally fill in their deliberate blanks with “higher CO2= Global Warming”.
