Summer break has started very early for kids in one Michigan school district.
Buena Vista schools have been closed for five days already, and on Monday, the district's website stated that the school would be closed until further notice. For good reason, this decision has parents, and the community, up in arms.
The problem in Buena Vista is that the school district, educating approximately 450 kids, is out of money. All the teachers have been laid off and a financial emergency has been declared. The district has suffered from declining enrollment, which, in turn, has led to a loss of $3 million in state funding since 2010.
In an effort to keep schools open, teachers said they would work without pay. This is not possible under Michigan law so educators have been left in limbo. To make matters worse, the staff has also lost their health insurance.
The Buena Vista School District website states that they consider it their "highest calling to be entrusted with the care and education of the communitys children."
This sounds nice, but what about the students left hanging with unfinished class work? This lingering question has yet to be answered.
In the midst of the chaos, parents have been trying to transfer their children to other districts. Given the school year is almost over, it's not the most opportune time for kids to switch schools. Some nearby districts are looking at every student on a case-by-case basis.

Schools in most areas of this country are run by, administered by school boards in the respective counties, burroughs, etc.
Their primary source of funding is through that part of the local property tax assessments that the school boards assess. It is usually routed through state administered dole-outs, but the source is property taxes.
Declining enrollment doesn’t reduce property taxes. If the state is paying from assessments based on enrollment, then some sumbitch in the state hierarchy is spending the extra because I’d be a dollar to a donut the school board sure as hell didn’t drop the tax assessment.
I’d raise holy hell there if I were a homeowner in the country and at the state level. There is some chicanery going on here IMO.
A madrasa coming soon
Having not had snow recently, we did not have that precise problem. Not too long ago however the kids made up the snow loos days in June. Even if schools are open in the snow some will not attend and the money will be lost. In june, everybody comes to school
You would discover that you don’t really own your property, when it is sold to the highest bidder to pay those withheld taxes.
How in the hell did we get this far down this road?
Post not directed at you, just saying what I'm thinking. /salute
So what about the shrimp? Can they?
I realized this. That is why I said “if enough people did this.”
Do you realize how bad off a government (even Federal) would be if only the taxpayers withheld their payments even for 3 to 6 months?
Deprived of your government baby-sitters? Might have to care for your OWN kids 24/7?
Bummer.
ROTFLMAO!! I'm sure...martyrs for the cause...
lol
OH NOES!!!!!
Shhhhh...
It’s been a dream of mine to have 30 to 50 million Americans not file taxes to finally get their attention.
yes, it appears they can! there is a youtube video of the results
See your tax dollars at work.
District Fires All Teachers, Closes Every School
A good start.
See tagline.
If you claim the full deductions and withholding amounts, even some over, you’ll have to pay at the end of the year.
I regularly over claim to the point of no penalty, and then I wait until April 14 or 15 to file electronically.
I paid them $12,000 this year, no penalty or interest. Were I more devious, I supposed I could have mailed them a check for $500 saying that’s all I could pay now and can I please work out a payment schedule with them? that I could delay even longer.
Their only source of “no-sh!t” real income is from dumbass taxpayers that have the cash to give. None of this Fed buying T bills with Scrip money that has only a fart behind it for value.
This government is corrupt to the core. Giving them real money just gets them further down that road to destruction of this country.
No, they would seize your property. They don’t care about your reasons to do or not do something, you will render unto Caesar what is his.
Well yeah...if enrollment drops, that means reduced need for staff.
Staff are paid because they are needed. If not needed, they are dismissed. No hard feelings, just normal real world business.
Hard to do that with your employer cutting it from the top.
