Conservative group says IRS approved non-profit status after applying with liberal-sounding name

In May 2011, Drew Ryun, a conservative activist and former Republican National Committee staffer, began filling out the Internal Revenue Service application to achieve non-profit status for a new conservative watchdog group.
He submitted the paperwork to the IRS in July 2011 for a news site called Media Trackers, which calls itself a "non-partisan investigative watchdog dedicated to promoting accountability in the media and government." Although the site has investigated Republicans like Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Florida Gov. Rick Scott, the site's organizers are unapologetically conservative.
"One thing we don't hide is: 'Yeah, we're conservativefree-market, free-enterprise, full-spectrum conservative,'" Ryun told Mother Jones magazine last year.
Eight months passed without word from the agency about the group's application, Ryun said. In February 2012, Ryun's attorney contacted the IRS to ask if it needed more information to secure its non-profit status as a 501(c)3 organization. According to Ryun, the IRS told him that the application was being processed by the agency's office in Cincinnati, Ohiothe same one currently facing scrutiny for targeting conservative groupsand to check back in two months.
As directed, Ryun followed up with the IRS in April 2012, and was told that Media Trackers' application was still under review.
When September 2012 arrived with still no word from the IRS, Ryun determined that Media Trackers would likely never obtain standalone non-profit status, and he tried a new approach: Starting over. He applied for permanent non-profit status for a separate group called Greenhouse Solutions, a pre-existing organization that was reaching the end of its determination period.
The IRS approved Greenhouse Solutions' request for non-profit status in three weeks.

“The Human Fund - Money For People”
That means my 501(c)3 group, “Progressives Progressing to Progress”, should sail right through.
The brilliant Iowahawk came up with this one:
“I’m going to start the “Occupy Tea Patriot Socialist Collective Militia for LaRaza Tax Justice” just to watch the IRS heads explode.”
I’m willing to bet that there is a good deal of anger at 1600 PA ave tonight. Anger that the 0ne has been found out as a fascist dictator.
this is a great idea for a new thread! Ideas for your new liberal named organization.
We did something similar with a petition project. We called our group “Citizens for a Sustainable Corvallis”, just to mess with the local lefties heads. They did NOT like it.
now come on,, Yahoo,, that’s pilin’ on.. lolol
I was wondering why they didn’t do this. You’d think the IRS people would be smart enough to figure out.
Cheap and tasty!
The Daily Caller is reporting today that the infamous Lois Lerner of the IRS “speedily approved” the exemption for Obama’s brother’s “charity,” taking only one month to approve it while TEA Party groups waited THREE YEARS!!! The illiterate brother said he couldn’t fill out the paper work, so he began collecting monies without the permit. When Ms. Lerner intervened, she not only had the paperwork filled out in record time, but the permit was granted retroactively to cover the illegal funds he had collected in previous months!
Ms. Lerner should be summoned to testify under oath by the Senate’s oversight committee and questioned by Sen. Ted Cruz, the only senator capable of getting to the bottom of this flagrant abuse of power.
To quote Anakin Skywalker: "apparently not."
“Im willing to bet that there is a good deal of anger at 1600 PA ave tonight. Anger that the 0ne has been found out as a fascist dictator.”
Don’t you think that Hussein has won them over as his clan by now?
These are not the conservative non-profits you were looking for. (BTW, the IRS is a wretched hive of scum and villainy.)
I think that is brilliant!
How about really bending their brains with things like “Constitutional Progressives”, “Center for American Entitlement Studies”, or “Code Green” (as in money is green).
