Snowden hid copies of secret NSA documents in case something happens to him

A trove of classified documents supplied to The Guardian newspaper by NSA leaker Edward Snowden has been copied and shared with several people around the globe, journalist Glenn Greenwald told The Daily Beast on Tuesday.

Greenwald, the Guardian reporter who first began publishing National Security Agency documents earlier this month after meeting with the former intelligence contractor, told journalist Eli Lake that Snowden made arrangements to ensure others around the world have encrypted copies of that information should any circumstances allow the data or its source to be compromised.

Snowden “has taken extreme precautions to make sure many different people around the world have these archives to insure the stories will inevitably be published,” Greenwald said. He added that the files are “highly encrypted” and corresponding passwords to render them readable have not yet been distributed.

According to Lake, Greenwald said, “if anything happens at all to Edward Snowden, he told me he has arranged for them to get access to the full archives.” Greenwald previously claimed that Snowden provided him with the archives of "thousands" of documents, dozens of which he considered to be newsworthy. Revelations published thus far by The Guardian and attributed to Snowden have generated international headlines and responses from presidential administrations worldwide.

The latest news from Greenwald comes in the midst of an international manhunt for Snowden that has made awkward the relations between the United States and other nations around the globe. The US unsealed an indictment against Snowden on Friday, but has been unable to extradite him to the country where he faces charges of espionage.

I have not heard anyone else bring this up yet... Once Snowden publishes enough validated dirt on government snooping he will then be free to CREATE more documentation out of thin air! He has the skill to create such false documents and nearly everyone will believe him and discount any denials. :-)

Just think of the possibilities.....

Benghazi, Targeting of political enemies. Monitoring of elected officials and the later blackmailing of same...etc

Hope he doesn't die in the next 10 minutes or so or all that drama would have been for nothing.........

I doubt that the statement that no one has the passwords is true.

I'm sure the actual downloading only took a few minutes.

Frankly, if I put my BOFH hat on and gain the requisite level of access, the actual op might only take an hour or two. A single usb stick can load a DVD worth of info in a few minutes. All he has to do is load up a lunchbox full and transfer it to an unsecured network with sufficient bandwidth and it's out of hand. As an admin he probably could visit the server facility, if he had access to classified and unclassified networks and along with lame-ass security he could make the whole thing leak like a tarpaper roof in a hailstorm.

Really. I remember a DOD contract where the people inside the "secure facility" could interact with any outsider via AIM using the AOL servers. What a joke. And that turned out to be the tip of the iceberg.

Or the people with the passwords do not have the encrypted files which were more widely distributed. If he was smart (which I am still not sure about) he would have generated random passwords, sent them out to a couple people and not kept or looked at them. That way the KGB can’t beat the passwords out of him.

As I explained on another thread: He was a sysadmin, with root access.

He could also set up a script with suid turned on and siphon off all manner of info - with the witless assistance of users of the system.

The audit records will tell, but none of us will ever see or hear what they learned from him. . .

They have already stated they have no idea what he took. So if he was real good, he would have changed system time, done his work, then changed the time back to present. Makes it more difficult to track his actions. Some hackers have done that to my online sites in the past. And if he was real good he had the time changing randomly while he was doing his work.

Basically they are completely out of luck. Clueless. And this is exactly why you cannot ever construct a digital data base like this. Never ever. Oh well. The former US government has learned that lesson. They have all been compromised and they all must immediately resign. That is what happens in the real world. The entire government resigns when it has become a security risk and/or becomes horribly compromised.

I doubt that the statement that no one has the passwords is true.

My guess - He has distributed sealed envelopes to people around the planet. These people open the letters if he is killed. The letters could contain the cypher codes to the encryption or just partial codes. My guess is the people he sent them too wont ever tell anyone they have them. Especially now.

Thanks for the link, FW - reading it now.

And I cannot imagine that no one has any way to get into what he has. A person would have to be extremely nuts/stupid not to have made arrangments of some kind.

In reality, all he needed to take was the database schemas with the record counts.

50 or so schemas would tell anyone what, who and how many people are in it.

Indeed...Assange and his team is on a roll.... Heck he may use some of Waldo's documents to blackmail his way out of the Embassy in London. I would not put anything past Assange.

Assange leaked documents WITH names of ‘our’ informants,.... he would not listen to reason from others about putting peoples life at stack...Assanges response...”They were informants, they deserve to die”....He released the documents and those informants were caught and tortured....needless to say many of Assanges team broke off from him after that.

And this guy is handling Snowden? He wants the Documents and cares little for Snowden.

Even if they are encrypted...Ha!..the subculture nerds can and likely will crack the password....not to mention you can bet nations leaders will have their people on it.

Besides...this whole thing is Assange’s doing and Waldo is his stooge... I’m sticking to that story as I said from the get go. Assange is running this, and was from the get go...along with his team doing the foot work.

No they wont. They could not crack the Climategate files that remained encrypted and they had them for a few years. The hacker later released the cypher key and finally, we could learn more detail about yet another conspiracy from the outlaw US government.

Well then looks like Waldo’s going to be on the run no matter how he plays this....but then he said he likely would be.

Assange’s group has these documents and the passwords ...they likely won’t be hacked...

However I wonder if the guy who was his right hand man won’t be trying...they had a huge fallout...he knows well how Assange works it...he’s the one who developed much of what Assange used in the documents he stole.

The real action now is going on underground on the net...or soon will be...to get at these documents.

That outfit doesn't work if you are looking for Aeroflot SU 150. It was amusing how Snowden got all those newsies (such as Max Seddon of AP) to buy tickets on that 12-hour dry flight to Cuber and then failed to board.
