A dog was shot and severely injured by a Leander police officer Monday night after the officer attempted to serve a warrant at the wrong address, according to the dog’s owners and a statement from the Leander Police Department.

The dog, a German shepherd named Vinny that works as a therapy dog, was shot in the neck and is recovering at the home of his owners in Liberty Hill.

Renata and James Simmons, the dog’s owners, are baffled and distraught by the actions of the officer. According to the statement from LPD, Warrant Officer Woodson Blase arrived at the Simmons’ home on FM 3405 to serve a warrant, knocked on the door and was walking around the back of the house when two German shepherds ran toward him.

The officer feared for his safety and fired three shots, the statement said.

James Simmons said he didn’t know the officer was there until he heard the gunshots. When he approached the officer in the front yard, Simmons said, the officer told him he was there to serve a warrant. Simmons had never heard of the person named in the warrant and has lived at that home for nine years. When he asked the officer what address he was looking for, Blase did not answer, Simmons said.

Vinny was hit once in the neck and was rushed to an emergency veterinarian. The dog is expected to live, but may not walk normally again, James Simmons said.

The incident is under administrative review, according to the statement from LPD.

Some of Hitler’s SS Units kept puppies and to graduate from one of the SS schools, they had to cut the puppies throat. Sick.

Someone knows the real reason these cop are so trigger happy regarding dogs. The truth needs to be known.

I love labs. 2 of my dogs are labs, golden color, one lab mix, she's vanilla color, one Irish setter, and a Jack Russell who is psycho. But I love ‘em all, every Heinz 57 mutt out there. My husband had to put his foot down when I brought the fifth one home, lol. So I carry water and treats in my car to give any poor stray I see.

Labs are very protective, and very sweet. Mine are the most patient dogs most of the time, but let a stranger come to the door, it's chaos, with all 5 dogs barking. None of them would bite anything but a pork chop, except the Jack Russell. He's a treacherous little hound.

Is PETA making a list and checking it twice?

I believe it. As others have pointed out, most serial killers start on animals and work their way up to humans.

“Is PETA making a list and checking it twice?”

PETA doesn’t really think humans should “own” animals. PETA-run shelters have an almost 100% kill rate, IIRC.

I’m sure you know this, just piggybacking.

Personally, I think it's the frustration of the job. Always on the alert, always the potential to get shot, high stress and anxiety. They train but only get to shoot at paper. I think the ones shooting dogs are using this “I feared for my safety stuff” just to shoot at something living. Or, they are on steroids or uppers. As bad as that sounds I believe it.

If it were ‘just safety’ and ‘fear’ then the dogs would have all been German Shepherds, Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, etc. But they are not always that.

It’s mid-level intimidation like breaking the windows of Jewish owned shops. It’ll get amped up, wait and see.

I'm wondering if shooting the dog first has become part of standard police training, but in typical government fashion, they got it wrong. Instead of shoot the pit bull, it's shoot anything that's furry and had four legs.

Desensitization in order to make it easier to kill civilians. Notice the lack of consequences when they accidentally kill the wrong person at wrong addresses during no knock assaults. They should be charged with manslaughter and for killing dogs the cops should face personal liability in both civil and criminal court.

Good luck with that. .

“The cops have a much more aggressive attitude now. “

They have become extremely risk averse and will do anything to avoid personal injury. That means shooting anything that might be a threat. Dogs are not new, their behavior is predictable, they protect their territory by barking and approaching strangers. The vast majority of times they dont bite. Drug dealers with pit bulls may be an exception. This shoot on approach carp will turn people against these idiots faster than anything.

Warrant Officer Woodson Blase needs to be fired for gross incompetence.

Then he needs to be arrested for animal cruelty.

I don’t know, but if a cop told me he ‘feared for his life’ when he’d just shot a Dachshund or similar I’d sue him in civil court for actual damages and treble (punitive) damages.

They have become extremely risk averse and will do anything to avoid personal injury.

Much higher risk professions are airplane pilot, fisherman, lumberjack, farmer, miner, roofer, trash collector, truck driver. Many dogs really have it out for the mailman, and postal carriers aren't allowed to go postal on the family dog. The fat trough eaters are just trying to make it to their cushy pension, and will use what's in easy reach on their tool belt to protect that plan.
