Camille Saint-Saens wrote a number of fine sonatas. This four-movement piece is one of his great crowd pleasers. The finale is a killer piece of music. I’ve seen violinist Scott Yoo play this a number of times at the Festival, and he’s done it so often he doesn’t use a score anymore. This recording is a classic from the Fifties, featuring Jascha Heifitz.

Camille Saint-Saens, in the last year of his life, wrote sonatas for various woodwind instruments accompanied by piano. World War I had ended, millions had been slaughtered, music had been taken over by “barbarians”, and the proud tower of European civilization had crumbled. But you wouldn’t know it from his music. Camille was in total denial about what had happened, as was his German counterpart Max Bruch. War? What war?

This sonata for clarinet is one of the gems of the literature. There is an autumnal feeling to the first and third movements that is Camille’s only concession to the Great War and its aftermath.

Saint-Saens: Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in E-flat, Op. 167

Good evening, Maestro!

I am totally found out after your excoriation last night of the 4th Movement of the "Organ" Symphony! I agree intellectually with your critique of that movement, but I have to admit that I have delighted in it for many years. I have always recognized that it is a flawed work, and I have wondered what Ludwig would have done with that material.

I daresay he would have gotten it right.

But for all of its faults, I still get goosebumps during the initial exposition of the theme in that movement.

And on another note, my children were exposed to classical music through it. When they were much younger, they would shriek "PIG!!" every time they heard it.

Thanks very much for your work on Saint-Saens.

I’ve seen Scott Yoo and Joshua Bell do this sonata, and they are in the same league.

I remember hot sunny days at Fenway Park watching the Red Sox.

Back-in-the-day, when Us Peasants could actually afford to go there.

Ludwig would have understood that the theme was too short for either sonata development or counterpoint, be it canon or fugue. He would have lengthened it, reshaped it and come up with a countersubject.
