Did You Know That Houses In Detroit Are Cheaper Than Used Cars?

Posted on 07/24/2013 8:16:58 AM PDT by pinochet

Fifty years of socialist rule in Detroit has achieved a revolution in cheap housing. Because 60 percent of the population of Detroit fled from the city because of high crime rates, there are more houses than people in Detroit. This article from Bloomberg Businessweek says that you can buy a house in Detroit for $6,000.

http://www.businessweek.com/the_thread/hotproperty/archives/2009/03/the_median_home.html

This is less than what most people pay for a used car. Advocates of "affordable housing" must be very happy.

It would be interesting if one of these liberal tech-freek cos. would buy a chunk of the devastation, fortify it and move their employees there....a few of these enclaves with razor wire food supply and safe transport....eventually some of the tax base could return...and there is a lot of cheep starving labor there...really its almost like rural china!

Not many houses left..because they burn them down for fun.but there ARE huge buildings that just need revamp....the place could become like a hive of electronic productivity.

There is one area of course that is quite prosperous that would be the muslim controlled area holding a pop of 3-5 million...they however have their own economy established and dont pay taxes normally.Years ago they were treated like walking atms by the black gangs but not any more...gangsters hookers and dealers disappear in dearborn the mussi section of detroit.

I have no idea how old you are but you’d have to be 90 or so if your GRANDparents were involved in the underground railroad. And they’d have to have been in their 20’s or so when they were involved in that. That’s been 160 or so years ago.

Would be interesting to know though. There’s usually a nugget of some truth to family stories.

The sheer history that’s been destroyed, and will be destroyed soon, is mind boggling.

What I find interesting is that the lib-commies would like to force us all into ghetto-prisons.

Excepting that most of us escaped years ago.

Even so, they still pass laws to force us to "enjoy" ghetto life to make it seem more desirable not to live where we want.

They make sure the price of gas is high to get us to buy their Priuses and they make us wrap up our garbage like little presents to their gods.

We are just too mobile for them. Praise the Lord!

They sure do have their work cut out for them, don't they?

“The article also says that you can get a huge 8 bedroom mansion with two levels and a 3 car garage for $14,000.”

Sure, but you will need to spend a lot of money to re-plumb, re-wire, etc. Those abandoned homes have been stripped to the studs. In many cases you will have to do the work multiple times as you are refurbishing, often the new wiring or pipes get stolen as soon as it is installed.

I like to think about taking 500 like minded friends and buying up a major portion, running it locally like godly conservatives, and just sort of reclaiming the space with some sanity.

Sadly I have nowhere near 500 friends. It would be cool, though.

Anything of value is already gone, I’m sure.

I have a giant cast iron and copper tub that was salvaged from Detroit in my bathroom. Weighs north of 1,500lbs.

I got it for $150. Shipping cost $375.

1. That home is priced at 499,000, not 6,000.

LOL. You’re right. I’m not THAT old! Perhaps it was my great-grandparents...and, yes, I would love to know the true history, but I don’t think I have the energy to delve that deeply into my family history (too many of the old ones are gone, too)...not to mention the other rumor of grandpa’s mob connections!

If I can ever find out the address or if I could jog my memory to even remember the street name, I might be able to go from there — I wouldn’t even be able to take a stab at when those 2 homes were built. Ah, well.

BTW, I want that wood/rod iron banister from the home on Strathcona!!!!!!

Yes, but not located in the inner city (?) — says Palmer Woods (Ferndale schools close by)...but I think Black Agnes posted it to show the beauty of the craftsmanship of some of these homes.

Here's a story from the Detroit Free Press last week:

"Detroit bankruptcy unlikely to hurt home prices" Or, it can't get any worse..

Could some one buy the house and then have it moved to a better location?

Yes. But the odds they’ll actually GET that price are exceedingly small.

Especially now.

And that price in no way reflects the true value of that home. Were that home 50m in any direction you could easily double that price. Imagine the price of that home were it located on Mackinac Island. Easly 3 or 4 times that price. And they all cost essentially the same to build back in the day.

Yeah, that banister is wonderful.

If you look through the ‘similar homes’ links to the right you can see other really neat old homes too. Although in one some heathen appears to have painted gorgeous ornate plaster work AND the pressed tin ceiling. Lime Green. And the walls a nice shade of grape.

Crimes against architecture I say.

Perhaps some fund-raising genius could get the Communist Party of America, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (their words, not mine), the American Civil Liberties Union, the Sierra Club, the United Auto Workers, The Democratic Party, and such to donate enough money to turn the entire city a National Monument, and name it The Detroit Liberal Policy Wonderland.

Visitors could pay to be driven around in heavily armored vehicles (made in China) while witnessing paid thugs randomly living their lives, demonstrating turf wars, drug deals, gang rapes, serial impregnations and such local color.

Professional homeless could be shipped in on a regular basis to serve as victims of colorful muggings and knock-out games, to demonstrate dumpster diving, free-lance urination and defecation, cardboard shanty construction, abandoned home squatting, etc.

Unemployed union workers could once again become gainful through hourly protests, riots, and property damage. Visitors could - for a price - pose as journalists and practice filming these scenes and writing liberally-slanted propaganda pieces.

The tour vehicles could also drop people off, for a price, to witness a real, live meeting of the city counsel as they craft a back-room pay-to-play deal with local, state and national graft experts (politicians).

Get with it Detroit! Think outside the box. If you’ve created a lemon, sell lemon-scented meth.
