Rep. Peter King: Libertarians in GOP Risk Destroying Party (and RINOs like King don’t?)

If Republicans don’t quash the libertarian streak shown recently by some of their members they risk following the destructive lead of Democrats in the 1960s, says GOP Rep. Peter King of New York.

“When you have Rand Paul actually comparing [NSA leaker Edward] Snowden to Martin Luther King or Henry David Thoreau, this is madness,” King said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union. “This is the anti-war left-wing Democrats of the 1960s that nominated George McGovern and destroyed their party for almost 20 years. I don’t want that happening to our party.” …

There are two kinds of politicians: Bigger Governmentists and smaller Governments.

It really is as simple as that.

Trying to attract democrats is futile.
Putting the conservatives and Constitutionalists
into a BLOCK will effect the GOP-E.
That is the only hope we have.

Admittedly a slim one, the road Obama and the
democrats are taking us down is a dead end,
the Republican party isn’t even saying slow down.

Libertarianism only exists because they can’t see any difference between the RNC and DNC.

Oh libertarians see the difference. That difference being if the DNC had the votes tomorrow they would repeal the Bill of Rights immediately...for the children. The RNC would denounce this move as extreme and instead offer their plan to phase out the Bill of Rights over a three year period...for the children.

The anti-war left took over the country during the 1970s. The marched thru almost all of our institutions. The media, the colleges, the non-profits, the unions, the legal profession and the list goes on. They were all infiltrated and taken over by the left during the '70s and they have remained firmly in control of these institutions through to the present.

Well, I guess that explains the total lack of wars and foreign interventions since the end of the cold war in the early 1990's, then, doesn't it?

What makes you think the left is against wars? They were against the Vietnam War because we happened to be fighting Communists. If the Viet Cong had been acolytes of George Washington and the South Vietnamese had been Marxist-Leninists, they would have fully supported us fighting on behalf of the South Vietnamese.

The only good things about Libertarians is when you get rid of them.

You sure did that! None of them lousy libertarians stinking up your grand old party since after the 2004 elections. So how did all of those elections go for you guys after that?

I wasn't the one going on about the anti-war left taking over everything.

You're not making sense and you are certainly not following what Peter King said. He said that the hard left destroyed the Democratic Party for 20 years after McGovern was nominated to run for President in 1972. That position is utterly ridiculous. The hard left gained strength throughout the 1970s. And even during the Reagan years, they were able to consolidate their hold on many American institutions such as the media, the Hollywood film industry, colleges, unions, etc. Do you deny these facts?

More importantly, the lesson to be learned from the success of the anti-war left is that ideological consistency works. The left acted on their beliefs and they were able to shift American culture significantly to the left. The results can be seen today and are undeniable to all but those who are blind.

If conservatives want to shift American culture back to the right, then they need to emulate what worked for the left and disregard what Peter King is saying about it being counter-productive to act on one's ideological beliefs.

And, one more time, I wasn’t the one who said the anti-war left took over everything. If you would like to correct or expand on your statement that the anti-war left took over everything, please feel free to do so.

Opinions vary.

Jimmy Carter and the Democrats who controlled Congress during the 70s would disagree with you - at least on who was in charge during the 70s.

It’s just so easy for these statist RINOs. Everything they don’t like they label libertarian and the bubbas just lap it up.

Bears repeating. They use the ignorance of their audience to their advantage.

You’d think conservatives didn’t exist anymore. This is beyond lunacy. The base is neither Libertarian NOR RINO. We’re CONSERVATIVES. Where the hell is our representation?!

I feel like I’m picking on someone who isn’t all that great at reading comprehension, especially of his own writing. I’ll just let this one go because picking on you wouldn’t be very sporting of me.

Everyone needs to do their research about Ronald Reagan and libertarian beliefs.

Reagan was no libertarian, he was an economic conservative and could use that as a bridge to that portion of conservatism that libertarians accept in theory, but he did not share their radical leftism on the issues that they succeed in advancing, the social issues.

Too many folks here hear “libertarian” and think “Libertarian Party”. Two completely different animals,

They are the same thing, the libertarians formed a party to promote their philosophy into politics, and it does.

Here is the libertarian idea on personal relationships for instance.

Now where is the conflict that you claim?
"Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should have no impact on the government's treatment of individuals, such as in current marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws. Government does not have the authority to define, license or restrict personal relationships."

Too late - the Republican party has already destroyed itself. The corpse will flop for a few years or so but it’s already dead meat.
