KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Police said they're awaiting an autopsy on an infant found dead in the back of a garbage truck in Kansas City, KMBC-TV reports. .

The discovery was made in the 2800 block of Campbell Street early Monday.

Police said a worker on the trash truck saw the baby among the trash in the back of the truck and called police.

Police are trying to determine where along the trash truck's route that the baby was picked up.

"At this point, we have no way of determining that," said Kansas City Police Capt. Tye Grant. "We're not sure obviously. That's something we'll be looking at -- to try to figure out where at on the route it came from -- but at this point we don't know, we're hoping we can determine that."

The location where the discovery was made was not the first stop on the route.

When I was a kid, there used to be a poster in the Post Office asking for information about a boy found dead. His body was found in a card board box in a field in a run down area of the city. No one ever came forward to acknowledge any connection to the child. I can still close my eyes and see that boy’s picture. It was speculated that he might have been connected to some traveling circus or carnival because surely if he was local, someone would have missed him.

That boy was about nine years old and malnourished.

One rarely hears about the Midwest. Horrible things happen there too, not just in the “sin cities” of the coasts.

That's some great detective work there...

The boy in the cardboard box.

Pretty famous case, as I recall.

I would like to think that is a special place in hell for those a-holes who abuse children (and animals).

The show “Unsolved Mysteries” did an episode on that kid and nothing ever came of it.

He is still known as the “Boy in the Box”.

There's a Planned Parenthood clinic 2.6 miles away.

I remember that — the “boy in the box” case... I believe Bill Kurtis did a feature on it some time back...

I just had a wild thought. Someone should take the image of the “Boy in the box” age progress it. That kid had to have relatives. More than likely when he grew up he would have looked liked them. He would have looked like his parents or grandparents when he grew to as well so that might help ID him. Someone to this day has to know who he is.

I was aware of another case that was profiled on the Unsolved Mysteries show, a murder that took place in Mission Viejo. The teenager’s body was found on a dead end street , one week-end.

My daughter was a student at the local high school at the time and the word was that the boy had attended a party the night before at a condo that was purchased by a South American drug lord for his two teenagers, who lived their without any supervision to attend high school in the States.

Nothing more was ever learned, but people always thought that something happened at that party.

Kansas City has huge issues - While there are nice areas they have a dangerous inner city and all the problems of larger cities.

Chicago is right in the middle of the Midwest. Peripheral to it are Milwaukee, St. Louis, Minneapolis, NW Indiana (Gary to South Bend), Quad Cities, etc. We’re responsible for some of the most fantastic atrocities, some of the most infamous people. Outweighed, (I wish) by the best of the best of the best that humanity could ever offer.
