The Navy has decided that it will not repair the nuclear-powered submarine USS Miami after concluding that the cost of repairing damage from a fire set by a civilian worker is more than it can afford due to mandated budget cuts.

You can also assume he belongs to one of the selected union classes which is why he felt entitled to a day off.

We are not currently set, to deal with what China is becoming.

There are 5 times as many Chinese, as there are Americans, and they are all working against us.

We are busy sleeping, and selling out. And yes I do mean selling out, to all you Republicans selling American manufacturing to the Chinese, to sell in every store in America.

Wake up people.

I’m series.

Bring back American manufacturing.

It wouldn’t surprised if they decided to extend the life of the USS Dallas, which is the next 688 class boat scheduled to decommission (mid 2014) They probably won’t refuel her, but can probably her another couple/few years out of her rocks. Then do the same thing with another 688 or two in order to maintain needed coverage.

The shame is that Miami was a 688i with VLS and the under ice mods. Dallas is a Flight 1 with neither ... But with repair costs of a half billion $ it doesn’t make sense to repair her.

I think they were weighing the replacement cost with the repair costs over the life expectancy of the sub. According to this article, this sub has a life expectancy of only 10 more years.

"... than it can afford due to mandated budget cuts."

Of all the nonsense and un-Constitutional actions by our 3 branches of government that we read about every day, this is one of the few responsibilities the Fedgov has via our Founding Fathers' intent.

I never get the meme that we are the only "super-power". With Russia, France, India, Pakistan, Israel, and now China having nukes, we are not the only "super-power". Yes, we have more than most, but if you got nuke, you got "super" leverage.

With China building its forces by the day, as we cut ours by the day, they will eventually become the "super". I still blame Clinton for taking campaign donations in exchange for nuke/missile tech to China and advancing their nuke/missile capabilities by at least a decade. Anyone remember Loral, Hughes, Riady, Chung? I also still believe that Ron Brown, Secretary of Commerce, was offed due to his opposition to duel-use tech being transferred from DOD to his Commerce Department.

The only thing that let's me sleep at night is knowing our Tridents are out there, but how long will that last with China building attack subs? That will be moot once some extreme Islamofacist nation/group get their hands on a deliverable nuke (Pakistan is always a question). The current nuke nations understand MAD, the Islam nutcases just don't care. So many of those Islamofacists want to see end times for their moon god so they can all go to heaven and eat fruit have their virgins.

If anything, our tax dollars should be spent on upgrading/increasing our current weapon systems and build new super weapons (think space weapons) to show the world to leave us alone and get their act together. We need a new arms race.

WHEN the first nuke hits America, maybe this nation of "gimmes" will wake up. Still, if not in their welfare or American Idol "hood", they may not care anyway. Guess they'll be surprised if it hits DC and their EBT cards become unavailable. The "Reality Show" junkies will just plain freak out as the economy nosedives. At 63, I hope I die before the above happens, and it will.

Yes sort of, but I don’t think it’s my place to propose what we need to do.

Other than to say, we need to bring back American manufacturing.

Whether that involves changing the rules of international trade, whether we invoke some sort of tariff, what it means I wouldn’t want to get involved in that debate just yet.

Just trying to bring up what is an increasingly (ever increasingly) important topic.

We cannot import everything.

We must make things in America.

What in this report make you say that?

"Democrats everywhere are celebrating."

Let me help you with the above: Democrats, Rino's, liberals, socialists, communists, one worlders, anarchists, et al, are "celebrating". Our military is the root of all evil according to their kumbaya thinking.

It's ironic that the original values that created America, and through its non-colonial military might led the way for so many nations to turn away from dictatorship and towards self-governance. Yet, from the moment Obambi took office, he has been apologizing for American might.

Think history: How many winning nations have ever given freedom to the people after wars and even helped to rebuild them (clue: Japan, Germany, Italy, South Korea)? How many nations have given so much to the World in so many other ways? What the hell do we have to apologize for?

Sometimes, just sometimes, I think we should pull up the drawbridge like Ron Paul and other libertarians think, and just annihilate any nation/group that messes with us. However, being a realist, I know we have to stay engaged in world affairs to minimalize growing threats. Of course to do so, means we have to have the military power. Downsizing our military is the exact opposite of what is needed to keep the crazies of the world in check.

Why, if a civilian employee of the shipyard set the fire, is the Shipyard (or, more likely, their Liability policy)not paying the bill? It was their negligence and failure to supervise their employee that contributed to the damage. . .

"Whether that involves changing the rules of international trade, whether we invoke some sort of tariff,..."

I'm good with tariffs since China and many other nations use cheap labor. Let's try it. Of course, the downside with tariffs is they limit/stop importing our goods with their own tariffs. Trade wars are rarely a good thing, but at this point...what do we have to lose? If foreign goods got too expensive, then maybe current American companies and future start-ups would be more inclined to hire in America rather than outsource.

Although I've owned 3 different small service companies, I know nothing about manufacturing and selling goods out country. I could be entirely wrong.
