Boehner: President Is in for ‘Whale of a Fight’ on Debt Limit
Roll Call ^ | 8-27-2013 | Matt Fuller

Posted on 08/28/2013 4:56:34 AM PDT by ClaytonP

Speaker John A. Boehner said Monday that President Barack Obama is in for a “whale of a fight” over the debt limit, with the GOP leader insisting on spending cuts greater than, not just equal to, the amount the debt ceiling is raised.

The Ohio Republican, speaking at a fundraising event for Idaho Republican Mike Simpson, said he has “made it clear that we’re not going to increase the debt limit without cuts and reforms that are greater than the increase in the debt limit,” according to the Idaho Statesman.

“The president doesn’t think this is fair, thinks I’m being difficult to deal with,” Boehner said. “But I’ll say this: It may be unfair, but what I’m trying to do here is to leverage the political process to produce more change than what it would produce if left to its own devices. We’re going to have a whale of a fight.”

On Tuesday, Boehner spokesman Michael Steel told CQ Roll Call that the speaker’s comments are “consistent with his long-stated position: Any increase in the debt limit must be accompanied by cuts and reforms greater than the increase.”

When pressed on Boehner’s comment that he would insist on cuts “greater than” the increase in the debt limit, Steel said, “the standard has always been, ‘equal to or greater than,’” signaling that the speaker was, perhaps, just short-handing his so-called Boehner rule — a dictum requiring “cuts and reforms equal to or greater than any increase in the debt ceiling.”

The White House, for its part, was also resolute on the matter Monday.

“Let me reiterate what our position is,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said. “And it is unequivocal: We will not negotiate with Republicans in Congress over Congress’ responsibility to pay the bills that Congress has racked up. Period.”

The Treasury Department announced Monday just as markets closed that, in mid-October, it would run out of the “extraordinary measures” that have funded the government since it hit its statutory debt limit in May.

In Boehner’s parlance, a “whale of a fight” = lots of tears and hand-wringing, followed by a “deal” that benefits no one but Obama.

We’re wise to your posturing, Boehner, so STFU.

These supposed debt-limit fights couldn’t be more phony. Congress should be cancelling unnecessary programs, not approving new boondoggles, and not appropriating funds at nearly the level they do.

Battling about the debt numbers, which are rigged anyway, is just a setup to supposedly cow the GOP into legislating less conservatively.

Unfunding Obamacare and acting only to assure current immigration laws are being enforced should be the two big items on Congress’s agenda.

Bohner appears to be saying this to get a budget passed out of house that Senate will accept (I assume he will use Dem votes to pass it) to avoid a shutdown.

The problem with his claim here is that Obama already has claimed that he will not negotiate at all over the Debt limit. And so the debt limit was expanded early this year by House without a fuss. So what has changed?

And exactly what cuts is Bohner talking about anyway.

This is how the big government trained elites have rammed through all of their agenda folks for decades, by blackmail and a gun to the head by putting the entire budget in one pot and threatening a shutdown if Congress holds the purse on anything.

Ask yourself...Why did the Republicans not change this procedure by now?

The Purse is what gives the people's house power and keeps balance in the Republic. Answer..the GOP-e supports a dictatorship that makes 'WE THE PEOPLE' irrelevant.

We have too much debt. No more debt limit increases. Live on your cash flow, like the rest of us.

RE :“Let me reiterate what our position is,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said. “And it is unequivocal: We will not negotiate with Republicans in Congress over Congress’ responsibility to pay the bills that Congress has racked up. Period.”

Of course if they dont pass a new budget or CR (by Oct 1) then that argument is moot. (Debt limit T0 ~ mid Oct)

Obama is demanding that they spend MORE $$$$ by passing a CR with O-care AND at the same time that they pay the bills for it claiming its past authorized spending, which only the emergency critical services exempt from a shutdown would be in a shutdown.

Example :Obama-care . The Dem congress 2010 passed that.
Its exempt from shutdown. So assuming a delayed CR then Obama claims that this congress has to pay the bills for Obama-care because it authorized that spending.
