Walmart fires employee for coming to the aid of woman being assaulted by her boyfriend in the parking lot

Kristopher Oswald says he was doing the right thing when he jumped to the aid of a woman being assaulted in the parking lot of the Michigan Walmart where he worked. Walmart says he violated company policy and fired Mr Oswald the next day. The 30-year-old stock clerk in Hartland, Michigan, was punched six times in the head by the woman's furious boyfriend, but he says he never thought the incident would cost him his job. 'I never expected all of this. And the least I expected was to not have a job,' Mr Oswald told WXYZ-TV. But Walmart says corporate rules demanded that Mr Oswald not intervene in that circumstance. Mr Oswald's manager wrote he was fired 'after a violation of company policy on his lunch break.' 'We had to make a tough decision, one that e don't take lightly, and he's no longer with the company,' company spokeswoman Ashley Hardie told the Associated Press.

Mr Oswald said he was in his car on his break from his job stocking shelves about 2.30am Sunday when he saw a man grabbing a young woman. It appeared that he was trying to stop her from leaving the parking lot, Mr Oswald said. He said he asked her if she needed help and the man started punching him in the head and yelled that he was going to kill him. Mr Oswald said he was able to get on top of the man, but then two other men jumped him from behind

Livingston County sheriff's deputies arrived and halted the fight. The woman was not seriously hurt. Police investigated, but could not track down the suspect.

None more so than ‘law enforcement’

Thank you! In the Days of Obama, sarcasm is just too milquetoast.

I agree.

As lawyers are officers of the court, shouldn't their numbers be limited?

We don't allow people to receive police training and then go into private practice as real cops, they must find a jurisdiction to represent.

Walmart is an evil, inhuman, anti-American Globalist Corporation.

It is the quintessential American success story.

A couple of times a year, my folks would go to the county seat in Bentonville to do their assessment and pay property tax. Helen and Sam ran a small 5-and-dime store. My brother and I talked to them many times when folks made the trip to Bentonville.

In the early 60s, Sam and his brother bought a small chain of department stores that were bankrupt or about to be bankrupt. The Waltons started their empire with about 6 stores. [I live in the small town that has store #4.]

Evil? Inhumane? Yeah. Walmart is a corporation, not a social organization. However, Walmart and its founding family have given $billions to social concerns.

Don’t blame walmart. Blame the trial lawyers.

The guy is on his lunch break—not on the clock. Is the problem that it all happened on the Wal Mart parking lot?

IF he had been on his day off & done the same thing somewhere else, would he have been fired??

This only highlights why the Tort Lawyers in the USA have caused such problems.

In the early 60s

I don't give a hoot what Sam Walton did 50 years ago. I care about what Walmart is doing to the country today. Its a major force that has ruined it.

See, he should have called 911, and they would have told him to "stand down". /s

Billions to social concerns don’t equal the impact of the lion heart that was missing when dealing with such situations... Walmart got panned SO bad on MAIN STREAM MEDIA sites! (e.g. ABC.com) that it offered the guy a job back.

Bunch of pussy cats. Not a lion heart to be seen.

That sheriff was lion hearted. He commended the guy. Walmart seems to be ruled by pussy cats.

Sadly, I think the reason Walmart has this policy is because if their employee injured the person doing the assaulting they would be liable for personal injuries and the millions the assaulter would get in a court. You KNOW a court would hold in favor of the assaulter over big pockets Walmart. Sadly, even though that policy sucks, I understand why they have it.

And... will anyone stand up for lion hearts any more?

Surely if anybody has the muscle to lobby, if that is what it takes, Wal Mart has!

And if it takes an incident (or more) like this to embarrass them into realizing the lion heart is what they need to be boosting... well, let it be. The original lion heart, the Lion of Judah, has arranged things that way. You can’t buy into cowardice forever; that brings its own punishment.

Walmart should require its employees to carry and take target practice.

Walmart is an evil, inhuman, anti-American Globalist Corporation.

Nonsense. Walmart provides value to many, many customers. I don't like that they have this policy but I don't blame Walmart. I would blame the litigious environment of the country. Look to the trial lawyers and the plaintiffs looking for a payoff... That's where the problem is.
